Abstract

This book provides a pioneering and data-oriented investigation of the syntax and semantics of important prepositional complementation patterns dependent on the prepositions in, to, at, on, with, and of in current English. The investigation is based on a sample of matrix verbs that governs the pattern of sentential complementation. The data includes the Brown and LOB corpora, English dictionaries and grammars, and the intuitions of native speakers.Rudanko sets up taxonomies of matrix verbs and argues that they often can be based on relatively few core classes. He questions whether verbs selecting a pattern also select other patterns of sentential complementation. Noting the quantity and quality of such alternation, he observes how differences in form are linked to differences in meaning. The study of relevant matrix verbs, supplemented with discussion of alternation and other syntactic and semantic properties of the patterns, points to the semantic functions that are associated typically with each pattern of complementation.

Abstract

How can teacher training students be prepared better for their profession? This explorative study deals with the development and evaluation of a university-based professionalization measure in the context of the internship semester. The aim is to qualify prospective teachers successively for the planning and implementation of inclusive teaching in the subject English against the background of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and a planning guide. Among other findings, a significant increase in students' self-efficacy expectations related to inclusive instructional design was observed. The study makes a first contribution to researching the potential of inclusion-oriented professionalization measures against the background of the UDL in the school subject English.

Abstract

Medical recipes written before the birth of modern scientific writing, at least as we know it today, are frequently characterised by the inclusion of expressions aimed at validating the efficacy of the remedies. These expressions have been traditionally considered as promises of efficacy. This research hypothesises that a closer examination of the context in which they are embedded may render interpretations that are different from promissory speech acts in the strictest sense. The corpus of study has been excerpted from the Corpus of Early English Recipesand it comprises medical recipes written in English between 1500 and 1600. The texts have been analysed using AntConc and the results have been manually checked afterwards. The detection of potential promises of efficacy has relied on Speech Act Theory and particularly on Searle¿s (1969) constitutive rules for promises. Relevance Theory (Sperber and Wilson 1995) has been used to account for the process of contextual enrichment the reader follows so as to derive the illocutionary force of efficacy statements. This work shows that not all efficacy statements are necessarily interpreted as promises in the Searlean sense. In fact, it has been observed that the occurrence of stance elements, i.e. epistemic and/or evidential devices, together with the authors¿ lexico-grammatical choices crucially shape their illocutionary force, normally by lowering the promissory value of the locutions.

Abstract

"First, this book can be marketed through the TESOL organizations. The TESOL has one of the largest memberships with over 12,000 members representing 156 countries (TESOL Brochure, 2017). Beyond TESOL International, many regional and local TESOL organizations are affiliated with TESOL. For example, SETESOL stands for the Southeastern Regional TESOL and the Carolina TESOL is in South/North Carolina. Marketing can be done through the websites of these organizations or at their annual conferences. We have the ESOL coordinators in several school districts who are closely related to the TESOL International and the local TESOL to help with the book marketing. Second, this book can be marketed through other professional conferences. More national, international, regional and local conferences have begun to pay attention to teaching ELLs. For example, the AERA annual meetings have SIG Divisions on educating ELLs. The ATE and NAME Annual Conferences have also added the topics related to teaching ELLs in recent years. This book can be marketed at these annual meetings/conferences through their book exhibit. (Note: AERA stands for American Educational Research Association that has also one of the large members in the nation and the world. ATE stands for Association for Teacher Educators; NAME stands for National Association for Multicultural Education). Third, this book can be purchased as reading text materials by college students in teacher education and training programs. There are many federal and state funding projects that have the budget for purchasing training materials. In addition, school districts can purchase the book for their in-service teachers. Through the grant programs, we also have the contact with the key personnel in the four target school districts (e.g., ESOL curriculum program coordinators) and we can encourage them to market the book through our good relation; the ESOL teachers and school personnel can recommend the books for further adoption in other K-12 classroom teachers since South Carolina has the highest increase in the ELL population and every teacher need to know how to teach ELLs"--

Abstract

This publication was inspired by the work of two Dutch teacher educators, Peter Lorist and Anja Swennen, who have done so much to promote understanding of the lives and work of teacher educators. What is distinctive about this booklet is that it exclusively focuses on one type of teacher educator working in one country: further education (FE) based teacher educators in England. Building on Noel's research into the 'secret life' of the FE based teacher educator, this booklet incorporates the directly told stories of 12 FE based teacher educators together with discussion and analysis which explores how they became teachers and then teacher educators. It considers the context of their work and explicates some common themes. Petrie asserted that 'writing about FE is ... to draw a map' of it. As such, this booklet adds new detail to the still largely underdeveloped 'map' of FE initial teacher education. It is both an invitation to researchers to identify 'areas of the map for exploration' and a resource for teacher educators, particularly, those inducting and working with FE's new teacher educators.
