Dieser Band untersucht anhand ausgewählter dänischer Prosa im 19. Jahrhundert die Ambivalenz philosemitischer Literatur. Es wird gezeigt, wie bestehende Vorstellungen über Juden und Jüdinnen einerseits literarisch entlarvt und gebrochen werden, und wie andererseits jüdische Figuren weiterhin Projektionsfläche und christliches Phantasma bleiben. Philosemitismus wird als spezifisch literarisches Phänomen betrachtet, indem gefragt wird, welche Erzählmöglichkeiten sich durch die jüdischen Figuren im Text eröffnen und was diese Figuren literarisch so attraktiv macht. Obwohl die untersuchten Texte zumeist um das Thema Religion kreisen, interessieren sie sich kaum für das Judentum ihrer jüdischen Figuren. Vielmehr dienen die Juden und Jüdinnen dazu, das Christentum aufzuwerten und zu erneuern. Dabei spielen Fragen nach Politik und nationalem Selbstverständnis ebenso eine Rolle wie nach Geschlecht, Begehren und der Bedeutung von Kunst.

Me{uml}ir Aaron Goldschmidt and the Poetics of Jewish Fiction presents a bold new reading of one of Denmark's greatest writers of the nineteenth century, situating him, first and foremost, as a Jewish artist. Offering an alternative to the nationalistic discourse so prevalent in the scholarship, Gurley examines Goldschmidt's relationship to the Hebrew Bible and later rabbinical traditions, such as the Talmud and the Midrash. At the same time, he shows that Goldschmidt's midrashic style in a secular context predates certain narrative movements within Modern-ism that are usually associated with the twentieth century and especially Czech writer Franz Kafka. Goldschmidt was remarkable in his era, both as a writer who explored his peripheral identity in the mainstream of European culture and as a writer of the first truly Jewish bildungsroman. In this groundbreaking study of Goldschmidt's narrative art, Gurley refashions his position in both the Danish and Jewish literary canons and introduces his extraordinary work to a wider, non-Scandinavian audience.

The book addresses the relationship between the literary representations of North Greenland and the Inughuit people in Knud Rasmussen’s expedition accounts The New People and My Travel Diary and the historical process of Danish colonization of North Greenland. The aim of reading both works is to demonstrate the ambivalence in representing North Greenland and the Inughuit, and, through this, to prove the existence of common mechanisms and cultural practices connected to mapping of the Other in a situation of asymmetric power relations. Applying a textual approach founded on colonial discourse analysis, the reading proves that literary mappings of geography and identity can never be stable, as they are in the state of constant transformation, perpetually recontextualized and reinvented.
