Abstract

Hybrid Censoring Know-How: Models, Methods and Applications focuses on hybrid censoring, an important topic in censoring methodology with numerous applications. The readers will find information on the significance of censored data in theoretical and applied contexts, and descriptions of extensive data sets from life-testing experiments where these forms of data naturally occur. The existing literature on censoring methodology, life-testing procedures, and lifetime data analysis provides only hybrid censoring schemes, with little information about hybrid censoring methodologies, ideas, and statistical inferential methods. This book fills that gap, featuring statistical tools applicable to data from medicine, biology, public health, epidemiology, engineering, economics, and demography.

Abstract

Paola Gloria Ferrario develops and investigates several methods of nonparametric local variance estimation. The first two methods use regression estimations (plug-in), achieving least squares estimates as well as local averaging estimates (partitioning or kernel type). Furthermore, the author uses a partitioning method for the estimation of the local variance based on first and second nearest neighbors (instead of regression estimation). Approaching specific problems of application fields, all the results are extended and generalised to the case where only censored observations are available. Further, simulations have been executed comparing the performance of two different estimators (R-Code available!). As a possible application of the given theory the author proposes a survival analysis of patients who are treated for a specific illness.   Contents ·         Least Squares Estimation of the Local Variance via Plug-In ·         Local Averaging Estimation of the Local Variance via Plug-In ·         Partitioning Estimation of the Local Variance via Nearest Neighbors ·         Estimation of the Local Variance under Censored Observations     Target Groups ·         Researchers and graduate students in the fields of mathematics and statistics ·         Practitioners in the fields of medicine, reliability, finance, and insurance     Author Paola Gloria Ferrario received her doctorate degree (doctor rerum naturalium) from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, in 2012, after having studied Mathematical Engineering at the Polytechnic of Milano, Italy. She taught mathematics to students of economics at University of Hohenheim and now works as a researcher at the University of Lübeck, Germany.

Abstract

This book introduces readers to copula-based statistical methods for analyzing survival data involving dependent censoring. Primarily focusing on likelihood-based methods performed under copula models, it is the first book solely devoted to the problem of dependent censoring. The book demonstrates the advantages of the copula-based methods in the context of medical research, especially with regard to cancer patients’ survival data. Needless to say, the statistical methods presented here can also be applied to many other branches of science, especially in reliability, where survival analysis plays an important role. The book can be used as a textbook for graduate coursework or a short course aimed at (bio-) statisticians. To deepen readers’ understanding of copula-based approaches, the book provides an accessible introduction to basic survival analysis and explains the mathematical foundations of copula-based survival models.

Abstract

This monograph offers a thorough and updated guide to the theory and methods of progressive censoring, an area that has experienced tremendous growth in recent years. Progressive censoring, originally proposed in the 1950s, is an efficient method of handling samples from industrial experiments involving lifetimes of units that have either failed or censored in a progressive fashion during the life test, with many practical applications to reliability and quality. Key topics and features: Data sets from the literature as well as newly simulated data sets are used to illustrate concepts throughout the text Emphasis on real-life applications to life testing, reliability, and quality control Discussion of parametric and nonparametric inference Coverage of experimental design with optimal progressive censoring The Art of Progressive Censoring is a valuable reference for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in applied statistics, quality control, life testing, and reliability. With its accessible style and concrete examples, the work may also be used as a textbook in advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate courses on censoring or progressive censoring, as well as a supplementary textbook for a course on ordered data.
