Abstract

"The medusa, the monkey and the puppet studies the discursive genealogy of Peronism through the meticulous reading of texts by Eva Perón, Borges, Cortázar, Walsh, Erminda Duarte, Pedro Ara, Copi and T.E. Martinez. By unifying three theoretical components - the political, the sacred, and the erotic - based on Carl Schmitt's political theology, Freud's metapsychology, and Rene Girard's ideas about violence and the sacred, the book exposes the contingent articulations of Peronism in controversy with its political adversary, Liberalism. The analysis introduces several original concepts, such as political teratology, 'imputrefiction' and prosthetic sovereignty, which illuminate long-standing discussions about national culture, the necrophilic tendency, or the obsession with Evita's embalmed body by revealing condensation libidinal of political identity in the sovereign body or corpse, site of sacrifice, pain and fetishism"--

Abstract

Argentina's populist government, led by Juan Perón, challenged the traditional model of the melting pot and granted legitimacy to hybrid identities. Peronism as a Big Tent examines Peronism's efforts to garner the support of Argentines of Middle Eastern origins, be they Jewish, Maronite, Orthodox Catholic, Druze, or Muslim.

Abstract

Abstract

Economic developments in Argentina over the last half-century present a puzzle to observers: Before World War II, the nation's per capita income and standard of living were comparable to those in countries like Canada and Australia; today, Argentina is submerged in deep economic, social, and political crises. In analyzing the events that led to this reversal, the author enhances our understanding of the phenomenon of arrested economic development in Argentina and similar developing countries. Dr. Peralta-Ramos approaches the problem with a dialectical interpretation of contemporary Argentinian history, examining crucial economic and political developments since 1930 from the standpoint of class interests in conflict. She discusses early government strategies for industrialization and their consequences for economic growth and institutional stability, maintaining that state policies generated a struggle for the appropriation of income and, ultimately, for control of the state, not only between the middle classes and the urban working class but also between the agrarian and industrial sectors of the bourgeoisie. The ensuing political instability led to further fluctuations in economic policy, to an erosion of institutional legitimacy, and, eventually, to state terrorism. Ongoing political crisis, war, and military rule, as well as soaring speculation and dwindling capital, hastened the downward spiral of the Argentinian economy. Dr. Peralta-Ramos offers in this book an innovative theoretical approach for examining how power relations can inhibit economic development and produce a fragile institutional system that threatens democracy.

Abstract

Close to three hundred stores and supermarkets were looted during week-long food riots in Argentina in December 2001. Thirty-four people were reported dead and hundreds were injured. Among the looting crowds, activists from the Peronist party (the main political party in the country) were quite prominent. During the lootings, police officers were conspicuously absent - particularly when small stores were sacked. Through a combination of archival research, statistical analysis, multi-sited fieldwork, and taking heed of the perspective of contentious politics, this book provides an analytic description of the origins, course, meanings, and outcomes of the December 2001 wave of lootings in Argentina.

Abstract

The regime of Juan Perón is one of the most studied topics of Argentina's contemporary history. This book-an English translation of a highly popular, critically acclaimed Spanish language edition-provides a new perspective on the intriguing Argentinian leader. Mariano Plotkin's cultural approach makes Perón's popularity understandable because it goes beyond Perón's charismatic appeal and analyzes the Perónist mechanisms used to generate political consent and mass mobilization. Mañana es San Perón is the first book to focus on the cultural and symbolic dimensions of Perónism and populism, this

Abstract

Major change came to Argentina during the first decades of the twentieth century. Following the mass influx of European immigrants to the country during the beginning of the century, a truly national culture was produced through mass media, facilitating the assimilation of immigrants and their descendants. New forms of media emerged, such as radio and cinema, as did new forms of entertainment, such as tango songs, films, and radio theater. Yet despite the unifying effect of popular culture, the nation remained divided, and, if anything, more so in 1950 than in 1910. This book argues that the key to understanding this paradox lies in a reassessment of the mass culture of the 1920s and 1930s. With a focus on film and radio in and around Buenos Aires, the locus of production as well as much of the market consumption, Karush shows how integration and class fractures occurred simultaneously in a short span of the country's history. He brings together the usually separated subjects of radio and cinema to show how they can combine to gauge a larger cultural and political environment and shed light on class distinctions. The book contributes to an ongoing discussion of the relationship between power and mass culture. It will be of interest to scholars of cultural history and urban studies and those interested in Latin American history and culture.
