Abstract

Towards a data-driven military. A multi-disciplinary perspective' assesses the use of data and information on modern conflict from different scientific and methodological disciplines, aiming to generate valuable contributions to the ongoing discourse on data, the military and modern warfare. 00Military Systems and Technology approaches the theme empirically by researching how data can enhance the utility of military materiel and subsequently accelerate the decision-making process. War Studies take a multidisciplinary approach to the evolution of warfare, while Military Management Studies take a holistic organisational and procedural approach. Based on their scientific protocols and research methods, the three domains put forward different research questions and perspectives, providing the unique character of this book.

Abstract

"David A. Charters has written a groundbreaking history of the influence of intelligence on eight Canadian Armed Forces operations between 1970 and 2010. Drawing on original documents, interviews, and other sources, the book examines the strategic, technological, and policy trends that impacted Canadian military intelligence; how the military intelligence organizations evolved; and how they supported operations and with what effect. The book makes three key points. First, that quality and adaptability could offset insufficient resources, but they could not guarantee operational success. Second, that belonging to international networks allowed the small Canadian military intelligence contingents to punch above their weight. Finally, by 2010, operational experience and internal reforms had transformed Canadian military intelligence and proven its value to commanders and civilian decision-makers"--

Abstract

This title combines two of spymaster Barton Whaley's most potent analyses of the craft: Turnabout: Crafting the Double-Cross and When Deception Fails: The Theory of Outs. Each examination dives into extensive case studies to establish not only bedrock understandings of essential espionage principals, but also creates guidance for their practical application on both individual and governmental scales. Deception is a basic tactic used by allies and enemies alike, but when both protagonist and antagonist ply the same trade, it is the master of the double-cross who comes out the victor. Turnabout examines exactly how to turn the tables on an opponent and use their own deception against them. Through 38 case studies this monograph dissects the double-cross to reveal the psychological battle of wits at its core. No matter how well crafted, however, there is always a chance that a deception will fail. But failure is not the end of a deception, and even failed deception operations can yield results. When Deception Fails pores over 60 case studies to determine why a deception will fail, steps to prevent a failed operation, and how to turn that failure into a success. Through his analysis of the Theory of Outs, Whaley identifies the cunning required to recapture the initiative rather than allowing an error to turn an operation into a total loss.
