This book gives a clinical context to optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings, while considering the differential diagnosis and providing patient management guidance. Relevant anatomical and technical aspects are discussed, followed by a pragmatic illustration of the use of OCT for the clinical spectrum of multiple sclerosis and optic neuritis, and finishing with information on monitoring ocular side effects of recently approved disease-modifying treatments in multiple sclerosis. Optical Coherence Tomography in Multiple Sclerosis: Clinical Applications is aimed at clinical neurologists working with patients suffering from MS and general neurologists who see patients with visual symptoms in their daily practice. Ophthalmologists sharing clinical responsibilities with neurologists for patients under disease-modifying treatments will also find the book of interest.

The book deals with the role of social capital regarding its potential to increase small islands’ adaptive capacity to climate change. The case study of the Isles of Scilly, UK, shows how social structures can play a very important role for climate change adaptation. It is argued that social features have to be understood in a non-deterministic and potentially ambivalent manner, according to their place-specific geographical, cultural and historical context. Only then, risk management and adaptation strategies can succeed and function in a sustainable way. The findings have relevance for the further refinement of social capital theory and social emergence. Combined with the perspective of resilience, this approach is also relevant from a policy standpoint, given that small islands have been identified as hotspots not only due to their vulnerability, but also because they serve as examples for media and politics to advance the agenda of environmental protection. >.

This volume unpacks an intriguing challenge for the field of media research: combining media research with the study of complex networks. Bringing together research on the small-world idea and digital culture it questions the assumption that we are separated from any other person on the planet by just a few steps, and that this distance decreases within digital social networks. The book argues that the role of languages is decisive to understand how people connect, and it looks at the consequences this has on the ways knowledge spreads digitally. This volume offers a first conceptual venue to analyse emerging phenomena at the innovative intersection of media and complex network research. .

“My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun” – “Death! be not proud, …” – “If I should die, think only this of me” Even occasional readers of English poetry will probably have heard these lines before, and many poetry-lovers will recognize them as the opening lines of sonnets. Indeed, many of the best-known poems in English are sonnets, and they are probably the most frequently anthologized poetic form in English. Although not all sonnets are great poetry, they have an unwavering fascination for their readers and, to adapt a line by John Donne, can even be “a little world made cunningly” (i.e., skilfully, cleverly, knowingly). That little world is explored by Jochen Petzold in great detail, wherefore this book, unlike other histories of English literature, focusses exclusively on the sonnet. Besides a few examples from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland this book charts the history of the sonnet in England, from the arrival of the sonnet in English culture in the sixteenth century to developments in the twenty-first century. Focussing mainly on sonnet sequences, it covers not only the ‘big names’ of English sonneteering like William Shakespeare, John Donne, and Rupert Brooke, quoted above, but also introduces its readers to lesser-known poets and their work. The sonnet sequences and individual sonnets are discussed as case studies which provide accessible readings, whereby the book is recommended for experts as in-depth studies as well as for fans of English poetry as a solid basis.

The past decade has seen the field of proteomics expand from a highly technical endeavor to a widely utilized technique. The objective of this book is to highlight the ways in which proteomics is currently being employed to address issues in the biological sciences. Although there have been significant advances in techniques involving the utilization of proteomics in biology, fundamental approaches involving basic sample visualization and protein identification still represent the principle techniques used by the vast majority of researchers to solve problems in biology. The work presented in this book extends from overviews of proteomics in specific biological subject areas to novel studies that have employed a proteomics-based approach. Collectively they demonstrate the power of established and developing proteomic techniques to characterize complex biological systems.
