Evangelical missionary societies have been associated with the processes of colonization throughout the globe, from North America to India, Africa, and into the Pacific. In late eighteenth century Britain the Church Missionary Society for Africa and the East (CMS) began its missionary ventures, and in the early nineteenth century sent three of its members to New Zealand, then an unknown, little-explored part of the world. This book anthropologizes the processes of missionization, presenting a case study of the New Zealand CMS mission station, Te Puna, settled in 1832 following the closure of New Zealand’s first mission, established in 1814. The historical archaeology of Te Puna demonstrates the particularities of one outpost of early nineteenth century British colonization, but its story resonates around the globe, reflecting local differences as well as common patterns in missionization. In all mission types, domesticity is revealed as a central, unifying concern of the ‘civilizing mission’; other themes of interaction with indigenous peoples, household economy, the development of commerce, and social and gender relations were played out. Across the globe, a common material culture traveled with its evangelizing (and colonizing) settlers, with artifacts appearing as cultural markers from Cape Town in South Africa, to Tasmania and Victoria in Australia, and the even more remote Bay of Islands in New Zealand. This book brings to life the Te Puna mission: a simple, rural household, where the larger dramas of settlement, colonization, and culture contact are clearly reflected in the archaeological and archival records. At the same time, the processes of missionization within New Zealand are placed within the wider framework of evangelical efforts in other parts of the world in the early nineteenth century.

The Global Change Ecology and Wetlands book series will highlight the latest research from the world leaders in the field of climate change in wetlands. Global Change and the Function and Distribution of Wetlands highlights information of importance to wetland ecologists. The chapters include syntheses of international studies on the effects of drought on function and regeneration in wetlands, sea level rise and the distribution of mangrove swamps, former distributions of swamp species and future lessons from paleoecology, and shifts in atmospheric emissions across geographical regions in wetlands. Overall, the book will contribute to a better understanding of the potential effects of climate change on world wetland distribution and function.

Since the British colonial period anthropology has been central to policy in India. But today, while the Indian state continues to use ethnography to govern, those who were the "objects" of study are harnessing disciplinary knowledge to redefine their communities, achieve greater prosperity, and secure political rights. In this groundbreaking study, Townsend Middleton tracks these newfound "lives" of anthropology. Offering simultaneous ethnographies of the people of Darjeeling's quest for "tribal" status and the government anthropologists handling their claims, Middleton exposes how minorities are—and are not—recognized for affirmative action and autonomy. We encounter communities putting on elaborate spectacles of sacrifice, exorcism, bows and arrows, and blood drinking to prove their "primitiveness" and "backwardness." Conversely, we see government anthropologists struggle for the ethnographic truth as communities increasingly turn academic paradigms back upon the state. The Demands of Recognition offers a compelling look at the escalating politics of tribal recognition in India. At once ethnographic and historical, it chronicles how multicultural governance has motivated the people of Darjeeling to ethnologically redefine themselves—from Gorkha to tribal and back. But as these communities now know, not all forms of difference are legible in the eyes of the state. The Gorkhas' search for recognition has only amplified these communities' anxieties about who they are—and who they must be—if they are to attain the rights, autonomy, and belonging they desire.

‘Following the Leaders allows Middleton to unmask the logic and impact of contemporary British election campaigns. Marshalling evidence from twelve campaigns over a decade of four general elections, the sophisticated analysis provides new insights into how party and leaders’ campaign strategy is used to bridge the local and national dimensions of the country’s political life’. -R.K. Carty, Professor Emeritus, The University of British Columbia, Canada ‘This is a fascinating – and highly original – account of the activities of party leaders in British elections.’ -David Denver, Emeritus Professor, Lancaster University, UK. This book concentrates on the leaders of the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats in British general election campaigns between 2010 and 2019, by exploring where they visit during the campaign and why, the impact they have, and how leadership is represented in the Press. It establishes the key strategic underpinnings for their visits, and the types of activities they undertake - in a uniquely British context. The degree to which leaders - and their visits - form an important dimension of voter behaviour is also considered. Moreover, the book explores how the Press delve into the personal lives of lesser-known opposition leaders and scrutinise the policies of Prime Ministers. The types of visits by leaders that become newsworthy are identified alongside their importance as a framing tool in election reporting. Beyond the leaders themselves, press reporting on their personal relationships is scrutinised, showing an increased acceptance of active partnership.
