Nanofabrication and nanotechnology present a great challenge to engineers and researchers as they manipulate atoms and molecules to produce single artifacts and submicron components/systems. Micro and Nanomanufacturing provides a comprehensive treatment of established micro & nano fabrication techniques and addresses the needs of practicing manufacturing engineers by applying established and research laboratory manufacturing techniques to a wide variety of materials. Engineers seeking more knowledge of how nano and micro devices are designed and fabricated will learn: Manufacturing and fabrication at the micro and nanoscales Using bulk and surface micromachining techniques, LiGA and deep x-ray lithography to manufacture semiconductors Producing master molds with micromachining The deposition of thin films, pulsed water drop machining, and nanomachining Mark J. Jackson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology at Purdue University. His current research focuses on understanding the properties of materials in the field of micro scale metal cutting, micro and nano abrasive machining, and laser micro machining.

The purpose of the brief is to explain how nanostructured tools can be used to machine materials at the microscale. The aims of the brief are to explain to readers how to apply nanostructured tools to micromachining applications. This book describes the application of nanostructured tools to machining engineering materials and includes methods for calculating basic features of micromachining. It explains the nature of contact between tools and work pieces to build a solid understanding of how nanostructured tools are made.

This book is an edited collection grouped into three key thematic areas. Its authors are researchers and theoretical scholars in the fields of education curriculum, education technology, education philosophy, and design for education. They present primary research and theoretical considerations, descriptive accounts and philosophical reflections to provide readers with a broad sweep of the ‘state of play’ in thinking about the place and space of learning. Transforming Education distils, from a panoply of critical arenas, an understanding of the forces currently at play in redefining curriculum agendas for education – from primary to post-secondary. It analyses the major ways in which the built environment of education is transforming, in response to various globalised policy drivers and new education delivery technologies. Its authors critique the ways education performs a governance function over the users and occupants of space, be it physical or virtual. F or readers who may be seriously engaging with the concept of spatiality in relation to education for the first time, this book provides the opportunity to develop a clear understanding of a wide scope of theory, practice and critique in relation to learning environments.

Prophet Singer: The Voice and Vision of Woody Guthrie examines the cultural and political significance of lyrics by beloved songwriter and activist Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie. The text traces how Guthrie documented the history of America's poor and disadvantaged through lyrics about topics as diverse as the Dust Bowl and the poll tax. Divided into chapters covering specific historical topics such as race relations and lynchings, famous outlaws, the Great Depression, and unions, the book takes an in-depth look at how Guthrie manipulated his lyrics to explore pressing issues and to bring greater political and economic awareness to the common people. Incorporating the best of both historical and literary perspectives, Mark Allan Jackson references primary sources including interviews, recordings, drawings, and writings. He includes a variety of materials from the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, and the Woody Guthrie Archives. Many of these have never before been widely available. The result provides new insights into one of America's most intriguing icons. Prophet Singer offers an analysis of the creative impulse behind and ideals expressed in Guthrie's song lyrics. Details from the artist's personal life as well as his interactions with political and artistic movements from the first half of the twentieth century afford readers the opportunity to understand how Guthrie's deepest beliefs influenced and found voice in the lyrics that are now known and loved by millions. Mark Allan Jackson is currently an assistant professor of English at DePauw University. His articles and reviews have been featured in Popular Music and Society and American Music.

Medical devices and surgical tools that contain micro and nanoscale features allow surgeons to perform clinical procedures with greater precision and safety while monitoring physiological and biomechanical parameters more accurately. While surgeons have started to master the use of nanostructured surgical tools in the operating room, this book addresses for the first time the impact and interaction of nanomaterials and nanostructured coatings in a comprehensive manner. Surface Engineered Surgical Tools and Medical Devices presents the latest information and techniques in the emerging field of surface engineered biomedical devices and surgical tools, and analyzes the interaction between nanotechnology, nanomaterials, and tools for surgical applications. Chapters of the book describe developments in coatings for heart valves, stents, hip and knee joints, cardiovascular devices, orthodontic applications, and regenerative materials such as bone substitutes. Chapters are also dedicated to the performance of surgical tools and dental tools and describe how nanostructured surfaces can be created for the purposes of improving cell adhesion between medical devices and the human body.
