This book represents a series of incursions from the region of Byzantine thought into territory long claimed by Western philosophy and theology. But at the same time, it is a project of attempting, beginning with thoughts inevitably rooted in the West, to penetrate as deeply as possible into the Byzantine philosophical and spiritual landscape. These are incursions that move back and forth between the visible and the invisible. This book shows that the problem of the relation between transcendence and immanence has found its answer in the philosophical and theological legacy of Byzantine thought, which has always sought to bring together strands tenaciously held separate in the West. This book transports contemporary readers to an ancient conceptual landscape as it expertly handles the Byzantine ideas with a familiarity unavailable to most contemporary scholars. It is an essential read for any scholar interested in recapturing the heart of Byzantine thought and using the lessons therein to address the problems which plague Western philosophy and society. .

‘Foltz’s study of human waste in Ishmael Reed, Thomas Pynchon, Gloria Naylor, Don DeLillo, Jonathan Franzen, and Samuel Delany convincingly demonstrates their scatological games to be premised on contesting psychoanalytic theory’s complicity in the upholding of white hegemony, heteronormativity, and patriarchal imperialism. American Sh*t is a valuable intervention into a field that has been too quick to relegate psychoanalysis to the “scrap heap”—and a compelling example of what literary analysis that circumvents the strictures of category and genre can achieve.’ — Dr. Rachele Dini, Department of English and Creative Writing, University of Roehampton, UK Contemporary American Literature and Excremental Culture: American Sh*t analyzes post-1960 scatological novels that utilize representations of human waste to address pressing issues, including pollution of waterways, environmental racism, and militarism. Primarily examining postmodern parody, the book shows the value of aesthetic renderings of sanitary engineering for composting ideologies that fuel a ruinous impact on the world. Drawing on late twentieth-century psychoanalytic thinkers Norman O. Brown, Frantz Fanon, and Leo Bersani, American Sh*t shows the continued relevance of psychoanalytic interpretations of contemporary fiction for understanding post-45 authors’ engagement with waste. Ultimately, the monograph reveals how novelists Ishmael Reed, Jonathan Franzen, Gloria Naylor, Don DeLillo, and Samuel R. Delany critique subjects who abnegate their status as waste-producing beings and bring readers back to embrace Winner of the 2019 Northeast Modern Language Association Book Award for Literary Criticism of English Language Literature.

"In this comprehensive and up to date history, from prehistoric proto-Indo-Iranian times to the post-Soviet period, Richard Foltz traces the complex linguistic, cultural and political history of the Tajiks, a Persian-speaking Iranian ethnic group from the modern-day Central Asian states of Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan. In eight chapters, the author explores the revitalisation of Persian culture under the Samanid Empire in the Tajik heartlands of historical Khorasan and Transoxiana; analyses the evolution of the politics of Tajik identity; and traces the history of the ethnic Tajik diaspora today."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Global Orthopedics: Caring for Musculoskeletal Conditions and Injuries in Austere Settings was conceived and written to be a unique reference for surgeons working in resource-limited environments. The first sections provide historical background, global public health perspectives of orthopedics, the role of culture, and a broad discussion of non-surgical and non-orthopedic clinical topics that are rarely encountered in high-resource settings but that affect orthopedic care. Adult and pediatric trauma are presented in an anatomical format for easy reference, with a focus on the natural history and the best treatment methods within existing limitations. The chapters on musculoskeletal infections provide a wealth of knowledge about these common debilitating conditions that is unavailable in any other single modern text. The non-infectious pediatric conditions section has been written for the non-specialist to handle selected developmental and early childhood orthopedic problems commonly seen in low-resource settings. Detailed chapters on reconstruction surgery, tumor management, amputations, and the orthopedic needs in the face of conflicts and natural disasters round out the text.

Now in a revised and expanded second edition, this unique text discusses the opportunities and challenges to the practice of orthopedic surgery in resource-limited environments around the world. Sensibly divided into thematic sections, part I examines barriers to care, from the poorly recognized global burden of orthopedic conditions and the less than ideal equipment to the cultural considerations and ethical dilemmas inherent in such situations. General clinical topics are covered in part II, such as non-surgical approaches and anesthesia, while the remaining sections discuss adult and pediatric trauma, presented in an anatomical format for easy reference with a focus on the natural history and the best treatment methods within existing limitations, followed by musculoskeletal infections, non-infectious pediatric conditions, reconstruction, and amputations. Topics new to this edition include the management of non-unions by induced membrane techniques, autologous bone grafting, bone growth and burn charts, the management of neck and back pain, and principles of orthopedic rehabilitation. Written and edited by experts with years of experience working in austere settings, this second edition of Global Orthopedics is a seamless transition from the original and expands the range of possible management strategies in places desperate for orthopedic care, making it a must for all surgeons and practitioners planning to work in such challenging settings.
