This volume collects the recent published articles of Guglielmo Cinque of the University of Venice, one of the world's top linguists. The book is divided into two sections, the first on restructuring, a central topic in Romance syntax and with connections to other language groups as well. The second part focuses on the consequences of treating clausal functional heads as members of a universal hierarchy in the domain of morphosyntax, offering a new perspective on many intricate problems arising in a variety of natural languages.

Here, Guglielmo Cinque offers cross-linguistic evidence that adjectives have two sources. Arguing against the standard view and reconsidering his own earlier analysis, Cinque proposes that adjectives enter the nominal phase either as 'adverbial' modifiers to the noun or as predicates of reduced relative clauses.

This text presents evidence locating adverb phrases in the specifiers of distinct functional projections within a theory of the clause. In this theory, both adverbs and heads, which encode the functional notions of the clause, are ordered in a rigid sequence.

The aim of the book is to collect and make available to the public recent studies on Roumanian in the framework of Generative Grammar. All the studies can be considered as highly advanced from both the empirical and the theoretical point of view. In fact, they deal with many of the phenomena that differentiate this language from other well-studied ones, adopting and further improving recent developments in linguistic theory. In this respect the book contributes both to Roumanian studies and to theoretical linguistics. These studies cover major areas of general syntactic investigation: the synta

The sixteen contributions which make up this volume are representative of the research currently carried out in Italy on Italian and, more generally, Romance syntax (in the generative tradition). The essays were specially collected to pay homage to Professor Lorenzo Renzi, a scholar who has since the 1960s promoted and shaped the study of Italian syntax in Italy, both through his own work and through a collective enterprise which culminated in the publication of the Grande Grammatica Italiana di Consultazione (3 vol., Bologna, Il Mulino, 1988-1995). Most of the contributors to this volume were engaged in that enterprise as young, unemployed linguists, and are now among the most prominent specialists in the field of Italian syntax.

The contributions in this volume shed new light on the discussion of whether the DP hypothesis applies universally or not. The issue is prominent not only for Slavic languages. Drawing on evidence from many other languages, Greek, East Asian, and Basque among them, the book has important implications for answering fundamental questions about the nature of definiteness and quantification.
