"In Children's Books on the Big Screen, author Meghann Meeusen goes beyond the traditional adaptation approach of comparing and contrasting the similarities of film and book versions of a text. By tracing a pattern across films for young viewers, Meeusen proposes a consistent trend can be found in movies adapted from children's and young adult books: that representations of binaries such as male/female, self/other, and adult/child become more strongly contrasted and more diametrically opposed in the film versions. The book describes this as binary polarization, suggesting that starker opposition between concepts leads to shifts in the messages that texts send, particularly when it comes to representations of gender, race, and childhood. After introducing why critics need a new way of thinking about children's adapted texts, Children's Books on the Big Screen uses middle-grade fantasy adaptations to explore the reason for binary polarization and looks at the results of polarized binaries in adolescent films and movies adapted from picture books. Meeusen also digs into instances when multiple films are adapted from a single source such as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and ends with pragmatic classroom application, suggesting teachers might utilize this theory to help students think critically about movies created by the Walt Disney corporation. Paco de hond droomt dat hij als topacteur de hoofdrol speelt in verschillende films. Zijn droom volg je in elf spreads. In het begin valt Paco met zijn gele vel en rode broek duidelijk op in vier zwart-witillustraties die verwijzen naar films. De overige zeven illustraties zijn in kleur, maar Paco is nog steeds herkenbaar. Per spread zijn er één of twee drukknopjes. Druk je daarop, dan hoor je een stukje filmmuziek van zo?n acht seconde of een geluid. De drukknop is van gewoon papier en zal snel slijten. Gelukkig zijn achterin het boek nogmaals de knoppen afgebeeld waar je op kunt drukken, ditmaal op een stevige kartonnen ondergrond. Daar vind je ook een korte uitleg over filmmuziek en de titels van de fragmenten. Kinderen zullen het leuk vinden om de korte teksten te lezen en zelf de geluidsfragmenten aan te klikken.  This book examines how the fairy tale is currently being redeployed and revised on the contemporary teen screen. The author redeploys Victor Turner’s work on liminality for a feminist agenda, providing a new and productive method for thinking about girlhood onscreen. While many studies of teenagehood and teen film briefly invoke Turner’s concept, it remains an underdeveloped framework for thinking about youth onscreen. The book’s broad scope across teen media—including film, television, and online media—contributes to the need for contemporary analysis and theorisation of our multimedia cultural climate.
