Hoewel iedere literaire schrijver uit de renaissance zich bij het bewerken van een model volop in creativiteit kon uitleven, baseerde hij zich op bestaande tekst(en). Gezien de grote waarde die in deze periode aan imitatie werd gehecht, is het verbazingwekkend dat we zo weinig weten over de manier waarop dit aangeleerd kon worden. Ook het onderzoek naar de denkbeelden over verschillende vormen en gradaties van navolging in de literaire praktijk van de volwaardige dichter staat nog vrijwel in de kinderschoenen. In zijn breed opgezette studie beschrijft Jeroen Jansen hoe natuurlijke aanleg, het karakter van de auteur en kunstvaardigheid van invloed zijn geweest op het (leren) imiteren, op oorspronkelijkheid, stofvinding, emulatie en plagiaat. Uitgangspunt hierbij zijn zowel de eisen die in dit opzicht aan de zich oefenende scholier werden gesteld, als de drijfveren en belemmeringen van volwassen auteurs.

Dutch literature of the 17th century, while not as famous as other elements of the culture of the Dutch Golden Age, deserves independent focus, not only because of its own intrinsic worth, but also because of the evidence of strong social concern that it presents and the light it sheds on other aspects of the Golden Age. Despite this, outside the Netherlands the literature has not been examined closely, undoubtedly because of the language barrier, but also because there is no reasonable introduction to the material in English. This book fills that lacuna.
