For a long time, the Dutch Golden Age has been regarded as a historiographical construction or reconstruction dating from the second half of the nineteenth century, when the rise of nationalist and even racialist histories and art histories was intended to promote the principle of a Dutch cultural identity, visible and analysable beyond the vicissitudes of time. This volume shows how the notion of the ‘Golden Age’, built on the ancient notion of aetas aurea, was constructed by the Dutch and for the Dutch, at the end of the sixteenth century, first to try to justify the theoretically questionable revolt of the Northern Netherlands against Spanish rule, and then to give shape to the new state and the new society created. However, we will see that there is not one but several possible definitions of this Golden Age, and consequently that it cannot be confined to one conception, so that it would be preferable to speak of a multitude of Dutch Golden Ages.

While the term ‘Europe’ was used sporadically in ancient and medieval times, it proliferated between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and gained a prevalence in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries which it did not possess before. Although studies on the history of the idea of Europe abound, much of the vast body of early modern sources has still been neglected. Assuming that discourses tend to transcend linguistic, historical and generic boundaries, this book has gathered experts from various fields of study who examine vernacular and Latin negotiations of Europe from the late fifteenth to the early eighteenth century. This multi-angled approach serves to identify similarities and differences in the discourses on Europe within their different national and cultural communities.

The Eighty Years’ War and the establishment of two states in the Low Countries inaugurated the publication of numerous texts to support a distinct Northern and Southern identity. This study analyses urban and regional chorographies written both in the North and in the South in the seventeenth century. It examines different strategies that chorographers developed to make sense of the recent and more remote past. It also looks at the development of different historiographical traditions in the Protestant North and the Catholic South and thus contributes to the current research interest in the history of historiography, cultures of memory and identity formation.

In Heroines, Harpies, and Housewives , Martha Moffitt Peacock provides a novel interpretive approach to the artistic practice of Imaging Women of Consequence in the Dutch Golden Age . From the beginnings of the new Republic, visual celebrations of famous heroines who crossed gender boundaries by fighting in the Revolt against Spain or by distinguishing themselves in arts and letters became an essential and significant cultural tradition that reverberated throughout the long seventeenth century. This collective memory of consequential heroines who equaled, or outshone, men is frequently reflected in empowering representations of other female archetypes: authoritative harpies and noble housewives. Such enabling imagery helped in the structuring of gender norms that positively advanced a powerful female identity in Dutch society.
