The study of eating disorders in men has purportedly suffered from a lack of dedicated attention to personal and socio-cultural aspects. Delderfield tackles this deficiency by spotlighting a set of personal accounts written by a group of men who have experiences of disordered eating. The text presents critical interpretations that aim to situate these experiences in the social and cultural context in which these disorders occur. This discursive work is underpinned by an eclectic scholarly engagement with social psychology and sociology literature around masculinities, embodiment and fatness, belonging, punishment, stigma, and control; leading to understandings about relationships with food, body and self. This is undertaken with a reflexive element, as the personal intersects with the professional. This text will appeal to students, scholars and clinicians in social sciences, humanities, and healthcare studies, including public health. Russell Delderfield researches male eating disorders at the University of Bradford, UK. He has diverse expertise, including person-centredness in higher education teaching, doctoral researcher education, and reflective practice. Wat zijn de rechten en plichten van vluchtelingen, asielzoekers en andere migranten? Dat is een van de meest urgente vragen van onze tijd. In een nieuwe visie pleit de Amerikaanse filosofe Seyla Benhabib voor poreuze grenzen, die de rechten van vreemdelingen garanderen, maar ook de democratische staat beschermen. Wie hoort bij een politieke gemeenschap? Vroeger was dat makkelijk te bepalen op grond van iemands staatsburgerschap. Maar door het afbrokkelen van de nationale soevereiniteit is dat niet meer zo eenvoudig. Langzamerhand ontstaan diverse vormen en gradaties van politiek lidmaatschap, aldus Benhabib, die zelf van Turks-joodse komaf is. In de voetsporen van Hannah Arendt laat ze de beperkingen van de nationale soevereiniteit zien. En in navolging van Immanuel Kant pleit ze voor een 'kosmopolitisch federalisme', waarmee moet worden voorkomen dat nationale staten illegalen en asielzoekers als criminelen behandelen. Benhabib wordt wel eens het geweten van progressief Amerika genoemd. Seyla Benhabib is hoogleraar politieke filosofie aan Yale University. In 2000 bekleedde zij de Spinoza-leerstoel aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Welke kleren draag je - en wat betekent dat? In dit boek onderzoekt de auteur de sociale betekenis van kledij - van aanduiding voor stand in de negentiende eeuw tot etniciteit, seksuele oriëntatie of politieke overtuiging in de twintigste eeuw - en beoordeeld de rol van mode in het creëren van een identiteit en de rollen van media en consumentisme in het creëren van mode. Ze vertelt over hoe kledij kan bijdragen tot de identiteit van een persoon als man of vrouw, als een ambtenaar of arbeider, als een scholier, yuppie of nerd. Het boek is geïllustreerd met foto's van vroeger en nu.
