Jacqueline Harpman, née en 1929 à Bruxelles, est psychanalyste et écrivain. Après avoir interrompu ses études de médecine, elle fait son entrée en littérature avec un recueil de nouvelles immédiatement accepté par Julliard. Son premier roman, qui suit dans la foulée, obtiendra le Prix Rossel, sorte de Goncourt belge. Dans les années soixante, elle se détourne de la littérature pour explorer une nouvelle voie, la psychanalyse. Mais en juin 1985, un éclair soudain la remet à l'écriture d'un récit. Ce sera le début de la deuxième partie de son œuvre, brillante, couronnée à la fois par les jurys littéraires et le grand public.
