Abstract

Our everyday lives are filled with a massive flow of information that we must interpret in order to understand the world we live in. Considering this complex variety of data floating around us, sometimes the best -- or even only -- way to communicate is visually. This unique book presents a fascinating perspective on the subject, highlighting the work of the masters of the profession who have created a number of breakthroughs that have changed the way we communicate. Information Graphics has been conceived and designed not just for graphics professionals, but for anyone interested in the history and practice of communicating visually. The in-depth introductory section, illustrated with over 60 images (each accompanied by an explanatory caption), features essays by Sandra Rendgen, Paolo Ciuccarelli, Richard Saul Wurman, and Simon Rogers; looking back all the way to primitive cave paintings as a means of communication, this introductory section gives readers an excellent overview of the subject. The second part of the book is entirely dedicated to contemporary works by today's most renowned professionals, presenting 200 graphics projects, with over 400 examples -- each with a fact sheet and an explanation of methods and objectives -- divided into chapters by the subjects Location, Time, Category, and Hierarchy."--Publisher description.

Abstract

"From the most ancient images to the contemporary, the line serves as a central figure in the representation of time. The linear metaphor is ubiquitous in visual representations of time - in almanacs, calendars, charts, and graphs of all sorts. Even our everyday speech is filled with talk of time having a "before" and an "after" or being "long" and "short." The timeline is such a familiar part of our mental furniture that it is sometimes hard to remember that we ever acquired it in the first place. And yet, in its modern form, the timeline is not even 250 years old. The story of what came before has until now never been fully told." "Cartographies of Time is the first comprehensive history of graphic representations of time in Europe and the United States from 1450 to the present. Authors Daniel Rosenberg and Anthony Grafton have crafted a lively history featuring fanciful characters and unexpected twists and turns. From medieval manuscripts to websites, Cartographies of Time features a wide variety of timelines that in their own unique ways - curving, crossing, branching - defy conventional thinking about the form. A fifty-four-foot-long timeline from 1753 is mounted on a scroll and encased in a protective box, while another timeline uses the different parts of the human body to show the genealogies of Jesus Christ and the rulers of Saxony. Ladders created by Catholic and Protestant missionaries illustrate Bible stories in a vertical format to encourage American Indians in Oregon to convert. Also included is the April 1912 Marconi North Atlantic Communication chart, which tracked ships, including the Titanic, at points in time rather than by their geographic location. There are even little-known works by famous figures, including a historical chronology by the mapmaker Gerardus Mercator and a chronological board game patented by Mark Twain. This lavishly illustrated edition is a revelation to anyone interested in the role visual forms have played incur evolving conception of history."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract

Designed by Simon Esterson of Esterson Associates, this long-awaited monograph documents the work of world-renowned typographer, designer and letterpress practitioner Alan Kitching. Spanning over fifty years, this lavish volume leads us from Kitching's first typographical experiments under the auspices of mentor Anthony Froshaug to his most iconic creations at The Typography Workshop. It covers his years designing alongside Derek Birdsall, as well as his time teaching letterpress at the Royal College of Art, and showcases his most colourful and expressive pieces, including his prolific work for The Guardian. Kitching's work hangs in private collections and galleries but it has also featured on everything from magazine and book covers, postage stamps and theatre posters, to wine labels, billboards and signage.

Abstract

In visual communication, contents are arranged, organized, and presented. Design laws and principles that are inherent to every medium ensure that from a distance a novel looks like a novel, an art catalog like an art catalog, and a magazine like a magazine. This publication offers a compact mix of explanations, practical tips, and background information on the topic. At its center is the grid as the most important design principle, whose function and application are thoroughly discussed. The grid allows a consolidated approach to a structured design like a blueprint that supports not only faster and easier reading but also better comprehension of information. In a second part, the author discusses the design process itself with answers to seemingly simple questions of what to observe when designing and the sequence of steps. Another chapter focuses on relevant theoretical aspects such as how method and intuition are correlated. The final section contains an extensive glossary.
