Painting seems to have lost its dominant position in the field of the arts. However, looking more closely at exhibited photographs, assemblages, installations, or performances, it is evident how the rhetorics of painting still remain omnipresent. Following the tradition of classical theories of painting based on exchanges with artists, Isabelle Graw's The Love of Painting considers the art form not as something fixed, but as a visual and discursive material formation with the potential to fascinate owing to its ability to produce the fantasy of liveliness. Thus, painting is not restricted to the limits of its own frame, but possesses a specific potential that is located in its material and physical signs. Its value is grounded in its capacity to both reveal and mystify its conditions of production. Alongside in-depth analyses of the work of artists like Édouard Manet, Jutta Koether, Martin Kippenberger, Jana Euler, and Marcel Broodthaers, the book includes conversations with artists in which Graw's insights are further discussed and put to the test.

The exhibition is not a survey, but explores the individual oeuvres of a number of painters who, on the basis of the portrait tradition, confront us with both the act of looking at the subject and the look we get back from the subject. Their paintings represent the (intimate) other against the background of their personal, social and cultural circumstances as both artists and humans. In the course of art history, painting has evolved from the subjective act of applying paint to a support to a complex practice that lies in an in-between zone. The medium has become a domain where the personal meets mass production, where manual actions are combined with industrial techniques and pure imagination is accompanied by the appropriation of images from the media and the arts. Portrait painting operates under these same new circumstances. Whereas the painted portrait initially symbolised the pursuit of trueness to life, it later played a crucial part in the rise of individualism. In our network culture, where the image of the self is moulded and shaped by the views of those around it, portrait painting raises pertinent questions about such notions as originality, identity, gender, subjectivity, awareness (and self-awareness). With work by Nicole Eisenman, Victor Man, Alice Neel, Paulina Olowska, Nicolas Party, Elizabeth Peyton, Avery Singer, Henry Taylor and Katharina Wulff.

In August 2016 under the title "Svanesang" (Swan Song), Gallery Magnus Karlsson, Stockholm and Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, Copenhagen presented a joint exhibition featuring two of the leading painters in the Nordic countries Mamma Andersson and Tal R. The exhibition's two parts consisted of new paintings and gouaches that were shown simultaneously in the two galleries in Copenhagen and Stockholm, respectively. With Svanesang, Mamma Andersson and Tal R entered their first real artistic collaboration. The exhibition came into being after a yearlong visual dialogue between the two, in which they had exchanged motives and sent photographic material to each other. In the exhibition, it eventually became apparent how the motives recurred in both artist's works and how the inspiration had waved back and forth between the two in an enriching interaction. Inspiration was never put on a pedestal, as the two artists had allowed themselves to manipulate the other's image universe, focus again and thus take ownership of the material themselves. Exhibition: Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, Copenhagen, Denmark / Gallery Magnus Karlsson, Stockholm, Sweden (30.08.-23.10.2016).

Accompanies a major double exhibition on Jean-Michel Basquiat and Egon Schiele - two artists that died too young but created masses of work over the course of a decade - at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, from 3rd October 2018 to 4th January 2019Comprises drawings, objects and paintings, gathered from private collections and museums all over the worldIn 2018 the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, is hosting exhibitons on two of the greatest artists of the 20th century - Egon Schiele, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Both exhibitions have the same curator, and are taking place at the same time. The shows illustrate exactly what it is that linked the two artists: line, and the use of expressive force. This, the catalog of the Basquiat exhibition, labelled "the definitive exhibition" by its curator, brings together 120 of the artist's most important masterpieces, sourced from interational museums and private collections. With the astonishing radicalness of his artistic practice, Basquiat renewed the concept of art with enduring impact. This Basquiat retrospective centres on the idea of Basquiat's unique energetic line, his use of words, symbols, and how he integrates collage in his paintings, sculptures, objects, and large-scale drawings. The catalog includes texts by great authors, including Paul Schimmel who tells of his meeting with Basquiat in California; Francesco Pellizzi who knew Basquiat well and has not written about him for a long time; and Okwui Enwezor who talks about the Afro American identity.Bron : https://www.standaardboekhandel.be/p/jean-michel-basquiat-9782072801532
