Abstract

One of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century, Richard Hamilton (1922-2011) is widely regarded as a founding figure of pop art, who continued to experiment and innovate over a career of sixty years. This publication presents the first retrospective to encompass the full scope of Hamilton's work, from his early exhibition designs of the 1950s to his final paintings of 2011, exploring his relationship to design, painting, photography and television, as well as his engagement and collaborations with other artists. Hamilton is best known for his pivotal role in the birth of pop art, including the groundbreaking installation Fun House from 1956, an immersive room combining images from movie posters, magazines and art history. The chronological progres-sion leads to seminal works such as the era-defining Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing?, the depiction of Mick Jagger in the iconic series Swingeing London 67, as well as images of other celebrities such as Bing Crosby and Marilyn Monroe. The book will also showcase the wider contemporary issues and political subjects in Hamilton's work, including the Kent State shootings and the IRA 'dirty protests', as well as figures like Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair in such works as Treatment Room 1984 and Shock and Awe 2010. Hamilton's interest in interiors, architecture and design is represented by his depictions of everything from the Guggenheim Museum in New York to a classic Braun toaster. Including over 250 full-colour illustrations, as well as essays by Paul Schimmel, Hal Foster, Benjamin Buchloh, Victoria Walsh, Alice Rawsthorn and Mark Godfrey, this is sure to be the definitive book on Richard Hamilton's work for years to come.

Abstract

Wilhelm Sasnal is one of the most celebrated artists to emerge from Eastern Europe in the twenty-first century. His practice embraces drawing, film, comics (his strips are regularly published in Machina and Przekroj, two Polish periodicals) and, above all, painting. Prolific, varied and deliberately unclassifiable, Sasnal channels the enigma of our contemporary image-based society. For him, 'art is largely a mystery [that] touches upon the invisible, the unnamed.' His painting draws together Pop, photorealism, abstraction, minimalism and photorealism to describe both banal and enchanted details of day-to-day reality, placing diverse subjects on a plane of equality. His key subjects, however, which he returns to again and again, are the possibilities and limits of representation. In his work, material and image swap places, crossing and recrossing the border between depiction and abstraction, often several times in a single canvas.. Sasnal was awarded the Vincent Van Gogh Prize in 2006, and his work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at major museums across Europe, including the Kunsthalle Zurich, the Frankfurter Kunstverein and the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst (MuHKA) in Antwerp. An exhibition of his work will open at London's Whitechapel Gallery in October 2011.

Abstract

"Lucian Freud's artwork is both intimate and raw. The viewer is confronted with corpulent figures, nudity, and glimpses into the psyches of those he portrayed. The painter, who died in 2011, was the grandchild of psychiatrist Sigmund Freud. The UBS Art Collection contains the majority of etchings from Freud's last creative phase, as well as one watercolor and two paintings--a total of fifty-four works of the highest quality that are simultaneously delicate and bold. The fact that the exhibition is held in Berlin's Martin-Gropius-Bau is of particular significance, as the city was Freud's birthplace, from which he was forced to flee with his parents in 1933. With the help of the UBS Art Collection, it is as if the artist now returns home."--
