Abstract

Mathematicians have recently made dramatic progress on the Twin Primes Conjecture, which asserts that there are infinitely many pairs of prime numbers that differ by 2. This book will describe two stories: that of the recent work on the Twin Primes Conjecture, and in parallel the related ideas from the previous two thousand years of mathematics.--

Abstract

The mathematical essays and recreations in this volume are by one of the most successful teachers and text-book writers of Germany. The monistic construction of arithmetic, the systematic and organic development of all its consequences from a few thoroughly established principles, is quite foreign to the general run of American and English elementary text-books, and the first three essays of Professor Schubert will, therefore, from a logical and esthetic side, be full of suggestions forelementary mathematical teachers and students, as well as for non-mathematical readers. For the actual detailed development of the system of arithmetic here sketched, we may refer the reader to Professor Schubert's volume Arithmetik und Algebra, recently published in the [G]oschen-Sammlung ([G]oschen, Leipsic), -an extraordinarily cheap series containing many other unique and valuable text-books in mathematics and the sciences.

Abstract

Britain is in crisis. Unrest and inner city tensions feed on unemployment. And as the Government struggles to contain the soaring debt, no one listens. Most are tired of ‘PR-savvy' words, tired of the ‘blame-game' that poses as debate.Divisions in the Cabinet force the premier's resignation. Because circumstances are too dire to afford the luxury of an election, the Queen calls a meeting of the three main party leaders. Some days previously, the Leader of the Opposition had received a letter that intrigued him. The writer, in fact, had held little hope of making contact. For him, it was one last try. Yet much to his amazement he received a phone call from the opposition leader's secretary. When they met, the Leader of the Opposition was polite, but blunt: ‘Why should you see the answer when all the experts down the ages have ignored it?' he asked - yet, his interest had been aroused.Following the meeting with the Queen, it was announced that the Leader of the Opposition had been asked to form a national government. With the support of the other two party leaders, he sets out to win over the cabinet, parliament and the country to implement the reform recommended by the letter writer.

Abstract

Alejandro Lerroux (18641949) was one of the most polemical figures of early twentieth century Spanish politics. As leader of the Radical Republican Party and six-time prime minister between 1933 and 1935, his admirers saw him as a patriot determined to create a Republic for all citizens, while his critics denounced him as an opportunistic demagogue willing to sacrifice the Republic to its enemies. Like his French republican contemporary Georges Clemenceau, Lerrouxs long political journey took him from the fiery radical leftism of his youth to centrist consensual politics. Thus while Lerroux was the most significant advocate of a revolutionary break with Spains monarchical and authoritarian past before 1931, after the proclamation of the Second Republic he wished to build an inclusive and tolerant democracy. This book is the first scholarly biography in any language of this titan of modern Spanish politics. Nigel Townsons The Crisis of Democracy in Spain (2000) is the only book in English to discuss Lerrouxs career in any detail, but his study is restricted to the Second Republic. Utilising neglected primary material, Villa Garcia argues that Lerroux embodies the transition from the elitist liberal politics of the nineteenth century to the modern mass politics of the twentieth. Like the Second Republic itself, Lerrouxs political career ended in failure. The work is a timely reminder to students of modern Spain that the demise of Republican democracy was not inevitable. Nevertheless, after the abrupt end to Lerrouxs effort to sustain a broadly based moderate and democratic government, Spain would never again achieve stable and constitutional rule until 1977. The political defeat of Lerroux was a major turning point in the countrys history, a fateful step in the failure of democracy and the coming of civil war.

Abstract

Starting with an illuminating historical survey, Mr. Carter devotes the main portion of his hook to the position of the British Prime Minister since 1894, with emphasis on the realities of British politics today. The relations of the Prime Minister with the public, his party, the Cabinet, and Parliament are discussed, and the problem of public relations generally is fully taken into account. Professor Carter fills an important gap, and provides an authoritative and readable commentary on British political life.Originally published in 1955.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Abstract

Churchill took a three-month vacation to North America in the summer and fall of 1929, a little known event in his long career. In the company of his son Randolph, his brother Jack and his nephew Johnny, the Churchills toured Canada and the U.S. Notable events include Churchill's meeting with important figures in politics, business, newspapers and entertainment (President Hoover, Prime Minister Mackenzie King, Bernard Baruch, William Randolph Hearst and Charlie Chaplin) as well as his visits to such natural landmarks as the Grand Canyon, Lake Louise, Niagara Falls, and Yosemite.
