Reading aloud represents one of the most effective practices for cognitive democracy that schools can adopt to guarantee academic success for all children and youth. With the multi-year project “Reading: So Cool!”, the Region of Tuscany wanted to introduce reading aloud in early childhood education services and schools in a systematic and structured way. The aim was to promote reading aloud as a regular and daily practice for the entire education system in Tuscany to reduce, over time, school dropout and learning inequalities. Starting from experience in the field, this book recounts, documents and explains the intentions, actions and results of the first year of activity in this project. It shares the theoretical foundations, practices, evidence collected and results achieved without forgetting the difficulties and a critical assessment. The dissemination of this experience is important and allows the promotion and replication – including outside the Tuscan region – the aims and tools of what has become, over time, a real educational policy that is able to encourage the achievement of core skills not only at school, but for life.

An exchange on education ideas has shaped the transatlantic discourse in education for a long time. Over the past two decades education science has increasingly become networked internationally. Since 2015, the Office for International Cooperation in Education at DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education has organized international sessions on education research at the Annual Meetings of the American Educational Research Association, thus providing a floor for transatlantic exchange on current research topics. The volume gives an overview of the transatlantic activities in education research with regard to these sessions representing a collection of topics ranging from school development over the use of large scale assessment and digital data in education to questions related to migration and public education or the economization of education. At the same time the volume offers a reflection on the assets and obstacles of international exchange.

This book offers a comprehensive picture of high-performing East Asian education systems, beyond their outstanding achievements in international assessments, such as PISA and TIMSS. Situating “excellence” within discussions of “equity”, it contextualises the conceptions and pursuits of equity amid the development of education systems, policy and curricula in selected East Asian societies. While parallels could be observed across the systems, including high-stakes assessment culture, increasing credentialism and high investment of family educational resources, there are also divergences in approaches and outcomes relating to equity policies and practices. In light of the challenges presented by low fertility rates, ageing populations, migration, and the economic demands of the 21st century, the book addresses these systems’ attempts to cater to further diversified student populations and maintain equity in excellence. As the international community relentlessly seeks to enhance equity in education, there is much these East Asian education systems can share. This book has appeal internationally to researchers, policymakers, educators, and anyone interested in East Asian education and equity. .

This handbook provides a compilation of research in Childhoodnature and brings together existing research themes and seminal authors in the field alongside new cutting-edge research authored by world-class researchers drawing on cross-cultural and international research data. The underlying objectives of the handbook are two-fold: • Opening up spaces for Childhoodnature researchers; • Consolidating Childhoodnature research into one collection that informs education. The use of the new concept ‘Childhoodnature’ reflects the editors’ and authors’ underpinning belief, and the latest innovative concepts in the field, that as children are nature this should be redefined in this integrating concept. The handbook will, therefore, critique and reject an anthropocentric view of nature. As such it will disrupt existing ways of considering children and nature and reject the view that humans are superior to nature. The work will include a Childhoodnature Companion featuring works by children and young people which will effectively enable children and young people to not only undertake their own research, but also author and represent it alongside this Research Handbook on Childhoodnature. .
