This eBook is a collection of articles from a Frontiers Research Topic. Frontiers Research Topics are very popular trademarks of the Frontiers Journals Series: they are collections of at least ten articles, all centered on a particular subject. With their unique mix of varied contributions from Original Research to Review Articles, Frontiers Research Topics unify the most influential researchers, the latest key findings and historical advances in a hot research area! Find out more on how to host your own Frontiers Research Topic or contribute to one as an author by contacting the Frontiers Editorial Office: frontiersin.org/about/contact

"This book is a convenient bench-side companion for biologists, designed as a handy reference guide for elementary and intermediate statistical analyses. Statistical methods most frequently used in publications and reports, as well as guidelines for the interpretation of results, are explained using simple examples. Throughout the book, examples are accompanied by detailed Excel commands for easy reference."--BOOK JACKET.

Published quarterly since 1996, the Journal of Agricultural, Biological, and Environmental Statistics (JABES) is a joint publication of the American Statistical Association and the International Biometric Society. The journal contributes to the development and use of statistical methods in the agricultural sciences, the biological sciences (including biotechnology), and the environmental sciences (including those dealing with natural resources). Published articles are of immediate and practical value to applied researchers and statistical consultants in these fields because only papers addressing applied statistical problems are considered. Interdisciplinary papers as well as papers that illustrate the application of new and important statistical methods using real data are strongly encouraged. Expository, review, and survey articles addressing broad-based statistical issues are viewed as particularly valuable contributions of the journal to practicing and applied statisticians. A distinctive feature of JABES is that it requires the author to include original data, so that others may immediately apply the statistical method(s) of interest.

Although visual analysis of EEGs has been the state of the art in electroencephalography for 70 years, advanced signal processing methods offer a superior alternative in numerous biomedical clinical and research applications. This first-of-its-kind guide bridges the gap from visual analysis to signal processing techniques, providing engineers, researchers, and clinicians with an innovative, clear methodology for biomedical signal.

Since the 1960's, a significant effort has been underway to program computers to “see” the human face—to develop automated systems for identifying faces and distinguishing them from one another—commonly known as Facial Recognition Technology. While computer scientists are developing FRT in order to design more intelligent and interactive machines, businesses and states agencies view the technology as uniquely suited for “smart” surveillance—systems that automate the labor of monitoring in order to increase their efficacy and spread their reach. Tracking this technological pursuit, Our Biometric Future identifies FRT as a prime example of the failed technocratic approach to governance, where new technologies are pursued as shortsighted solutions to complex social problems. Culling news stories, press releases, policy statements, PR kits and other materials, Kelly Gates provides evidence that, instead of providing more security for more people, the pursuit of FRT is being driven by the priorities of corporations, law enforcement and state security agencies, all convinced of the technology’s necessity and unhindered by its complicated and potentially destructive social consequences. By focusing on the politics of developing and deploying these technologies, Our Biometric Future argues not for the inevitability of a particular technological future, but for its profound contingency and contestability.
