To what extent can Islam be localized in an increasingly interconnected world? The contributions to this volume investigate different facets of Muslim lives in the context of increasingly dense transregional connections, highlighting how the circulation of ideas about 'Muslimness' contributed to the shaping of specific ideas about what constitutes Islam and its role in society and politics. Infrastructural changes have prompted the intensification of scholarly and trade networks, prompted the circulation of new literary genres or shaped stereotypical images of Muslims. This, in turn, had consequences in widely differing fields such as self-representation and governance of Muslims. The contributions in this volume explore this issue in geographical contexts ranging from South Asia to Europe and the US. Coming from the disciplines of history, anthropology, religious studies, literary studies and political science, the authors collectively demonstrate the need to combine a translocal perspective with very specific local and historical constellations. The book complicates conventional academic divisions and invites to think in historically specific translocal contexts.

Hörspielserien erzählen Geschichten und zugleich von ihren Produktions- und Rezeptionskontexten. Ina Schenker setzt mit einer transnationalen und transmedialen Perspektive exemplarische radio dramas aus Ozeanien und Subsahara-Afrika in Bezug zur deutschsprachigen auditiven Medienkultur. Philologische Rahmungen werden agil, was nicht nur dem inhaltlichen Bezug zu Diskursen rund um Leben und Wissen geschuldet ist, sondern auch den Ausdrucksformen der Hörspielserien selbst. Auditives Erzählen ist vielschichtig: es regt an und auf, gibt Motivation und unterhält, weckt Emotionen und Geschichten - ist politisch und partizipativ.

Wie organisieren transnationale Familien ihre multi-lokalen Lebenswelten? Welche Bedeutung kommt innerfamiliären Hierarchien zu? Welche sozialwissenschaftlichen Methodologien sind geeignet, um das transnationale Familienleben im gesellschaftlichen Kontext zu erforschen? Anhand der biographieanalytischen Untersuchung einer Familie aus dem ehemaligen Jugoslawien zeigt Eveline Ammann Dula die Verknüpfung der Mikro-, Meso- und Makro-Ebenen von Migrationsprozessen auf und betrachtet biographische Narrationen als Artikulation transnationaler sozialer Räume. Sie zeigt dabei die wechselseitige Beeinflussung und intergenerationale Übertragung von Migrationserfahrungen auf. Im transnationalen Migrationsmodell und seinen Nachfolgern manifestiert sich die kopernikanische Wende der Migrationsforschung: Migrant*innen und ihre Netzwerke sind nicht mehr Gegenstand (Objekt) der Sozialforschung, sondern werden als Träger*innen sozialer Welten (Subjekte) identifiziert und bilden den neuen analytischen Ausgangspunkt. Coretta Ehrenfeld lotet die philosophische Bedeutung dieser migrantischen Subjektivierung aus: Diese besteht unter anderem in der Kritik sozialtheoretischer Trägerschaft in nationalgesellschaftlicher Gestalt sowie infolgedessen in der begrifflichen Auflösung der Dichotomie zwischen sesshaft und migrantisch.

The industrial-port belt of Los Angeles is home to eleven of the top twenty oil refineries in California, the largest ports in the country, and those "racist monuments" we call freeways. In this uncelebrated corner of "La La Land" through which most of America's goods transit, pollution is literally killing the residents. In response, a grassroots movement for environmental justice has grown, predominated by Asian and undocumented Latin@ immigrant women who are transforming our political landscape—yet we know very little about these change makers. In Refusing Death, Nadia Y. Kim tells their stories, finding that the women are influential because of their ability to remap politics, community, and citizenship in the face of the country's nativist racism and system of class injustice, defined not just by disproportionate environmental pollution but also by neglected schools, surveillance and deportation, and political marginalization. The women are highly conscious of how these harms are an assault on their bodies and emotions, and of their resulting reliance on a state they prefer to avoid and ignore. In spite of such challenges and contradictions, however, they have developed creative, unconventional, and loving ways to support and protect one another. They challenge the state's betrayal, demand respect, and, ultimately, refuse death.
