Abstract

This is the first collection of essays devoted exclusively to the works of the eighteenth-century Scottish poet James Thomson. The volume is divided into two sections, the first addressing Thomson’s writings themselves, and the second the reception of his works after his death and their influence on later writers. The first section contains essays analysing the politics and aesthetics of Thomson’s major poems and also a reevaluation of Thomson as a heroic dramatist. The second section capitalises on the certainty felt by many in Thomson’s own century that the poet, especially through his most successful poem The Seasons, had won for himself an indelible fame. This volume provides a definitive reappraisal of his achievement for our own times.

Abstract

This Element studies eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century instances of transmediation, concentrating on how the same illustrations were adapted for new media and how they generated novel media constellations and meanings for these images. Focusing on the 'content' of the illustrations and its adaptation within the framework of a new medium, case studies examine the use across different media of illustrations (comprehending both the designs for book illustrations and furniture prints) of three eighteenth-century works: Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719), Thomson's The Seasons (1730) and Richardson's Pamela (1740). These case studies reveal how visually enhanced material culture not only makes present the literary work, including its characters and story-world. But they also demonstrate how, through processes of transmediation, changes are introduced to the illustration that affect comprehension of that work. Abstract

This study presents a contextual and intertextual reading of James Thomson's (1700-1748) poem "The Seasons", taking into consideration some of the presuppositions and habitus of the text's cultural community and the function of the poem's many intertextual allusions. An intertextual reading reveals "The Seasons", though heterogeneous on its surface, as coherent in its cultural functionality. An analysis of the poem's intertext uncovers textual strategies that attempt to re-legitimise poetic discourse as a culturally relevant force especially in relation to the newly privileged discourse of natural philosophy.
