"An FAO-sponsored Expert Workshop on Site Selection and Carrying Capacities for Inland and Coastal Aquaculture was held at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, in December 2010. The workshop was attended by 20 internationally recognized experts, including two staff members of FAO, and covered a number of relevant core topics and represented aquaculture in different regions of the world. Expertise within the group included the academic, regulatory and consultative sectors of the industry, giving a wide perspective of views on the core topics. Definitions of carrying capacity appropriate for different types of aquaculture were discussed and agreed based upon four categories: physical, production, ecological and social. The range and capability of modelling tools, including spatial tools, available for addressing these capacities were discussed. The prioritization and sequence for addressing site selection and the different categories of carrying capacity were considered in detail in terms of both regional or national priorities and site-specific considerations. This publication is organized in two parts. One part contains the workshop report and the first global review entitled "Carrying capacities and site selection within the ecosystem approach to aquaculture", while the second part is the full document. The latter part is available on a CD-ROM accompanying the printed part of this publication."--Publisher's description.

"A unique resource bridging the gap between academia and industry, Sustainable Fish Production and Processing analyzes in detail new, state-of-the-art fish production, processing, and waste management and looks at the potentiality and sustainability of already commercialized processes and products. The book explores general valorization methods, focusing on the extraction of high added-value compounds and their reutilization in different fields of the food, feed, nutraceuticals, and energy industries. Topics discussed surrounding fish production include food security issues, large marine ecosystems, aquaculture genomics, proteomics for quality and safety in fishery products, postharvest practices in small-scale fisheries, and life cycle impact of industrial aquaculture systems. Topics on fish processing and by-products include industrial thawing of fish blocks, sources and functional properties of fish protein hydrolysates, recovery technologies and applications, potential biomedical applications, ready-to-eat products, fish waste for feeding, and lipid extraction from fish processing for biofuels. This book is an excellent resource for food and aquaculture scientists and technologists; food, chemical, and environmental engineers; food industry professionals; and anyone addressing sustainability issues within the fish industry"--

Marine living resources are currently under severe threat from unsustainable use. International law urges a precautionary approach in the use of remaining fish stocks, necessitating rational domestic management of coastal fisheries and requiring foreign nations accessing these stocks to cooperate to this end. The manner in which bilateral fishing relations between the EU and various West African states have historically played out, however, has not followed this route. This book is a legal study of these relations from an inter-disciplinary and contextual perspective with particular reference to sustainability questions using three broad conceptual lenses: common resource management, integration towards sustainable development and the colonial legacy to interrogate the extent to which these interactions operated as legal instruments of sustainability.

From Seascapes of extinction to seascapes of confidence. Territorial Use Rights in Fisheries in Chile: El Quisco and Puerto Oscuro by Gloria Gallardo Fernandés is an important contribution to our understanding of the multifaceted challenges underlying sustainable solutions to ecological fisheries, the book describes how, in Chile, indiscriminate harvest of the edible shellfish Concholepas concholepas (false abalone or Loco), has been threatening not only the living of small-scale artisan fishers but also the ecosystem. In an attempt to strengthen the fishers’ livelihoods and at the same time recuperate the fish, the Chilean government introduced the regulatory measure: Management and Exploitation Areas for Benthic Resources (MEABRs), locally known as Management Areas (MAs) and internationally as Territorial Use Rights in Fisheries (TURFs).
