The book is devoted to the neurosurgical management of spasticity. Starting with a chapter on the anatomical and physiological foundations of spasticity and a short history of its neurosurgical treatment, it describes the neurosurgical methods currently available. As management differs between adults and children, the book is also structured accordingly, including evaluation, decision-making, Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy (ITB), botulinum toxin therapy, and surgery. Beyond ITB, the neurosurgical options covered include procedures focusing on the peripheral nerves, dorsal roots, Dorsal Root Entry Zone and spinal cord. Based on surgical experience collected with more than a thousand patients, the book gathers the most important aspects of our present understanding, presented using a practical, educational approach. It stresses the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, including neurologists, pediatricians and rehabilitation specialists. Close collaboration with other surgical disciplines like orthopedic surgery and neuro-urology are also outlined.

Yoga and Breast Cancer is a practical how to guide to using yoga to manage stress, relieve pain, and gain the strength necesary to make it through this illness. It follows the authors' own research in the subject that has shown a proven correlation between yoga practice and better health and outcomes after a breast cancer diagnosis. More than simply an exercise guide, the book is a deeply soothing form of moving meditation and physical activity that is a safe way to rebuild strength, stamina, and flexibility both during and following cancer treatments. It is intended to support women during th

Taking exception from previous publications and reviews, this handbook boldly knits botulinum toxin therapy indications in both dystonia and spasticity. Botulinum toxin therapy has indeed withstood the test of time in terms of its efficacy and safety, as applied in hyperfunctional states of the muscle and exocrine glands. Topics were chosen spanning from the basic science to the clinical applications and to instrument-guidance injections. The format was envisioned to be timely as one (either a novice or an experienced clinician) applies practical approaches with botulinum toxin therapy ranging from straightforward to challenging clinical scenarios. As well, clinicians and students alike will find the book useful in content and relevance to contemporary times. Please read with no fear and don't doubt because indeed you eventually become the winner as you finish the book.

This book aids the practitioner in understanding the difference between spasticity and muscle stiffness, weighing old and new treatment options, and developing an appropriate treatment algorithm for a given patient. Spasticity is a common and disabling condition after neurologic injury such as stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury and cerebral palsy. Current treatments for spasticity may exacerbate other problems. Hence, there is a great need to develop a comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of spasticity and muscle stiffness, its assessment, and the various treatment options available to obtain the best results to restore joint alignment, movement, and function. This book is organized into two sections: Part I of the book deals with the pathophysiology and assessment of spasticity and muscle stiffness, and Part II of the book explains the rationale, framework, considerations, and evidence for various treatments for both spasticity and muscle stiffness. This comprehensive approach will enable physiatrists, neurologists, internists, and physical and occupational therapists to achieve the best possible outcomes for their patients.

The book, in its second edition, is devoted to the neurosurgical management of spasticity and focal dystonia. Starting with a chapter on the anatomical and physiological bases of spasticity and a short history of its neurosurgical treatment, it describes the neurosurgical methods currently available. As management differs between adults and children, the book is also structured accordingly, including evaluation, decision-making, Intrathecal Baclofen therapy (ITB), Botulinum toxin therapy and Surgery. The large spectrum of scales for assessing hypertonia, spasticity, dystonia, contracture and joint/bone deformities, as well as the scoring systems for quantifying functional abilities are critically reviewed. Beyond ITB, the neurosurgical options covered include the microsurgical procedures focusing on the peripheral nerves, dorsal roots, Dorsal Root Entry Zone and spinal cord, and their intra-operative monitoring. In this second edition, the orthopedic surgical interventions available will take a large place, either as alternative solutions , or even better as important complements after spasticity be solved by the neurosurgical treatments. Based on surgical experience collected with more than a thousand and eight-hundred patients, the book gathers the most important aspects of our present understanding, presented using a practical, educational approach. It stresses the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, including neurologists, pediatricians and rehabilitation specialists. Close collaborations with other surgical disciplines like orthopedic surgery and neuro-urology are outlined.

This book is the result of studies on cerebral palsy (CP) in children that the authors and their collaborators (medical doctors and therapists) have carried out in recent years. It addresses the main topics associated with the evaluation of adaptive functions in the spastic forms of CP (definition and modifications over the most recent decades, newly classified orientations, etiopathogenesis, anatomic–functional correlations, semiotics, and the so-called associated disorders: visual, cognitive, and behavioral). The main goal of this book is to offer readily accessible information on the nature of the disease, the problems correlated with prognosis, and the rehabilitation. Because of its instructive nature and practical approach, the book will be an invaluable tool for practitioners already working in this field (medical doctors, child neuropsychiatrists and physiatrists, and rehabilitation therapists), for university students studying physical and occupational therapy, and for residents in rehabilitative medicine, child neurology, and orthopedics.
