Abstract

This book puts forward an interpretation of the Canticle which is alert to the literal sense of the poem. The author thus distances himself both from the allegorical interpretation and from an interpretation that is purely secular. According to the author, the Song offers a theological vision of human love. Barbiero sees the Song as composed in the third century BC, in the Hellenistic epoch, but also as hugely dependent on the love poetry of the Ancient Near East, particularly that of Egypt. Above all, however, the Song was composed in dialogue with the other books of the Old Testament, especially in contrast with the negative view of sexuality which they represent. The study pays particular attention to the structure of the poem and of the individual cantos: for Barbiero, the Song is a closely unitary work and is only to be understood as a whole.

Abstract

The Song of Songs, a lyric cycle of love scenes without a narrative plot, has often been considered as the Bible's most beautiful and enigmatic book. The present study questions the still dominant exegetical convention that merges all of the Song's voices into the dialogue of a single couple, its composite heroine Shulamit being a projection screen for norms of womanhood. An alternative socio-spatial reading, starting with the Hebrew text's strophic patterns and its references to historical realia, explores the poem's artful alternation between courtly, urban, rural, and pastoral scenes with their distinct characters. The literary construction of social difference juxtaposes class-specific patterns of consumption, mobility, emotion, power structures, and gender relations. This new image of the cycle as a detailed poetic frieze of ancient society eventually leads to a precise hypothesis concerning its literary and religious context in the Hellenistic age, as well as its geographical origins in the multiethnic borderland east of the Jordan. In a Jewish echo of anthropological skepticism, the poem emphasizes the plurality and relativity of the human condition while praising the communicative powers of pleasure, fantasy, and multifarious Eros.

Abstract

Belonging to Hebrew Wisdom literature, the Song of Songs offers a fresh look at love and relationships through its main female character, the Shulamite, which profoundly differs from traditional religious approaches to love and sexuality. Drawing from exegetical as well as philosophical sources, Abi Doukhan follows the Shulamite’s journey away from patriarchy to her own self-individuation as she discovers a wisdom of love that is deeply personal and feminine. .

Abstract

This biblical study re-examines the Hebrew text of the Song of Songs and considers its mystical meaning. Kingsmill seeks to demonstrate that a careful network of intertextual allusions has been deliberately used by the writer of the Song to refer metaphorically to the love of God for his people.

Abstract

The Dialogues of Love by Yehudah Abravanel (c. 1465 – c. 1525) is one of the most interesting examples of the encounter between Renaissance Platonism and Jewish tradition. Exploring some of the dialogic models for Yehudah’s work as well as the influence of the Biblical commentaries by his father Isaac, this book re-reads the Dialogues in the light of medieval interpretations of the Song of Songs and Solomonic tradition. Already adopted by some Renaissance Jewish readers, this perspective suggests a new interpretation of the Dialogues : Yehudah’s work may be regarded as an allegory of the encounter between a Jewish teacher – Philon – and the “foreign science” of philosophy – Sophia – which both seduces him and questions his wisdom.

Abstract

Hieronymus claimed that Origen had even surpassed himself in his Commentary on the Song of Songs. With these words of praise, Hieronymus spread the good word about the Christian genius from Alexandria and, for this purpose, translated two of Origen’s homilies on the Biblical song of love into Latin. Besides Rufinus’s Latin translation, only a number of small fragments of this presentation of the Song of Songs have survived.

Abstract

The Song of Songs was one of the most frequently interpreted biblical books of the Middle Ages. Most scholarly studies concentrate on monastic interpretations of the text, which tend to be contemplative in nature. In Out of the Cloister , Suzanne LaVere reveals a particularly scholastic strain of Song of Songs exegesis, in which cathedral school masters and mendicants in and around 12th and 13th-century Paris read the text as Christ exhorting the Church and clergy to lead an active life of preaching, instruction, conversion, and reform. This new interpretation of the Song of Songs both reflected and influenced an era of far-reaching Church reform and offered a program for secular clergy to combat heresy and apathy among the laity.
