Distance et défiance, intégration ou intimidation : les rapports qu'entretiennent les palais, sièges de la puissance souveraine, au tissu urbain qui les environne disent toujours quelque chose de la relation politique du souverain à ses sujets. Mais si les palais médiévaux ont fait l'objet, ces dernières années, d'enquêtes attentives, leur insertion dans l'univers urbain a beaucoup moins retenu les historiens et, paradoxalement, l'enjeu qu'ils représentent désormais dans la politique du patrimoine et l'économie du tourisme ne contribue pas toujours à les rapprocher des citadins qui vivent quotidiennement près d'eux. Le cas du palais des Papes et de la ville d’Avignon, où se sont déroulées les rencontres scientifiques à l'origine à ce volume, est à cet égard emblématique. C’est une double lecture, archéologique et urbanistique d’une part, idéologique et politique de l’autre, que proposent les essais rassemblés dans ce livre. Aucun ne cherche à tout prix à analyser les monuments étudiés comme des « manifestations architecturales » de phénomènes politiques connus par ailleurs car le rapport qu’entretiennent les lieux de la puissance et les sociétés citadines peut, dans bien des cas, infléchir ou nuancer, redéfinir ou masquer le lien politique. Sans se contenter d’une simple lecture interprétative des configurations urbaines, chaque auteur cherche donc à éclairer l’articulation, au sol et dans l’espace, du palais à la ville aussi bien par l’analyse archéologique que par celle des textes, des traités théoriques ou des actes de la pratique qui expriment la souveraineté. Le comparatisme est toujours ici d'un puissant secours. L'espace géographique retenu est donc vaste puisqu'il comprend la France du Sud, l’Italie communale, seigneuriale et princière (notamment, bien entendu, l’Italie centrale pontificale), l’Espagne chrétienne et musulmane, le Maroc des villes impériales.
