Abstract

Edited by internationally acclaimed experts in the field, this authoritative 2-volume Gold Standard comprehensively covers the neurobiology and diseases of the peripheral nervous system. It encompasses neurobiology, clinical neurophysiology, molecular genetics, and clinical diagnosis and management. The 4th Edition has been rewritten and updated to provide a fresh account of all subjects, with an emphasis on new information about cell biology, genetics, proteomics, clinical manifestations, and new treatments. And, a user-friendly organization allows readers to quickly find specific information, or access more in-depth coverage when needed. Provides authoritative, in-depth information on neurobiology and diseases of the peripheral nervous system. Presents complete coverage of development - anatomy - physiology - pharmacology -special testing (nerve conduction and EMG), autonomic testing, and testing of impairment and disability - and the diagnosis, management, and outcomes for peripheral neuropathies. Includes information on epidemiologic survey and pharmaceutical industry trials, with coverage of the complications of diabetes mellitus and other metabolic diseases.

Abstract

Developed and written by top international experts in the field, this lucid new work is a comprehensive yet concise manual for reviewing the basics of peripheral nerve anatomy, pathophysiology, all typical and classic lesions, and the appropriate diagnostics. The chapters culminate in a description of the complex step-by-step surgical repair of these lesions. Succinctly written, the manual covers a range of topics normally only seen in larger works: included are the various plexus systems and associated injuries, facial nerve surgery, compression neuropathies and tumors, gunshot wounds, pain management, and much more.

Abstract

This book presents recent topics on the development, differentiation, and myelination of Schwann cells, as well as pathological mechanisms and therapeutic approaches for peripheral neuropathies, such as Charcot–Marie–Tooth diseases, amyloid polyneuropathy, immune-mediated neuropathy, and diabetic neuropathy. The rapid progress of molecular biological techniques in the last decades, especially for RNA techniques and gene modification technologies, have allowed us to investigate the pathobiology of Schwann cells in vivo and in vitro. Studies combining recent stem cell biology with recent biotechnology, which is now closely linked to physicochemical fields, further explain how Schwann cell lineages develop, a process that has long been thought to be very complicated in vivo. The findings contribute to the elucidation of fundamental mechanisms during development and under pathological conditions. We now know that these are closely tied to each other. This book also introduces unique coculture systems to reproduce the neuron–Schwann cell interplay during development, degeneration, and regeneration. Up-to-date research topics with high-quality immunofluorescence and electron micrographs introduced by young and energetic contributors are sure to arouse the readers' interest in Schwann cell biology. Discussion from the viewpoint of basic and clinical neuroscience makes the book educational for researchers, medical students, and young clinicians.

Abstract

Painful Diabetic Neuropathy in Clinical Practice provides a concise, didactic and essential resource for clinicians in the management of neuropathic pain in diabetic patients. This volume opens with overviews of epidemiology, classification and clinical features, including a discussion of the negative effect of painful neuropathic symptoms on quality of life. These are followed by a chapter on diagnosis and staging, which includes approaches to history taking, clinical examination, pain assessment scales, testing and staging. The book concludes with a chapter on the various approaches in the management of neuropathic pain, including the most up-to-date guidelines on the pharmacological treatment of this condition. This concise handbook is an invaluable reference for primary care practitioners and diabetologists who wish to keep up to date with the diagnosis and management of neuropathic pain.

Abstract

Provides a comprehensive and contemporary review of the biology of sensory nerves. This book places an emphasis on the actions of drugs, transmitters and autacoids that initiate or inhibit sensory nerve activation or modulate the release or actions of the transmitters released from the central terminals of sensory nerves.
