This volume sheds twenty-first-century light on the charged interactions between memory, mourning and landscape. A century after Freud, our understanding of how memory and mourning function continues to be challenged, revised and refined. Increasingly, scholarly attention is paid to the role of situation in memorialising, whether in commemorations of individuals or in marking the mass deaths of late modern warfare and disasters. Memory, Mourning, Landscape offers the nuanced insights provided by interdisciplinarity in nine essays by leading and up-and-coming academics from the fields of history, museum studies, literature, anthropology, architecture, law, geography, theology and archaeology. The vital visual element is reinforced with an illustrated coda by a practising artist. The result is a unique symbiotic dialogue which will speak to scholars from a range of disciplines.

Starting from the principle that most of the inscribed elements of the contents and the physical structure of tombs provide information of some kind, whatever their original function, the participants at this conference organized by the researchers of the team « épigraphie et nécropoles » of the UMR 8546 of the CNRS have attempted to arrive at conclusions in relation to the social, political and religious aspects of the material evidence. Study of necropolises has one main advantage over the study of settlements : the tomb is a fixed structure, generally closed, where everything is placed inside and destined to remain there forever. It is thus possible to try to analyze the system of representation that organizes the world of the dead. Instead of being fixed, this system has a dynamic which provides it with its own movements and trajectories.

Early modern English literature abounds with archaeological images, from open graves to ruined monasteries. Showing that archaeology can shed light on literary texts, including works by Shakespeare and Donne, the book explores the kinship between two disciplines distinguished by their intimacy with traces of past life.

"When Austria-Hungary broke up at the end of the First World War, the sacrifice of one million men who had died fighting for the Habsburg monarchy now seemed to be in vain. This book is the first of its kind to analyze how the Great War was interpreted, commemorated, or forgotten across all the ex-Habsburg territories. Each of the book's twelve chapters focuses on a separate region, studying how the transition to peacetime was managed either by the state, by war veterans, or by national minorities. This 'splintered war memory, ' where some posed as victors and some as losers, does much to explain the fractious character of interwar Eastern Europe"--Provided by publisher.

Bringing together literature, newspaper accounts, wartime correspondence, and popular culture, The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier examines how the Unknown Soldier was imagined in diverse national contexts and used by radically opposed political parties. Laura Wittman argues that this monument established a connection between the wounded body vulnerable to the war machine and a modern identity defined by common mortality and social alienation. Highly original and interdisciplinary, The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier powerfully links the symbolic language and ethics of mourning to a fascinating national ritual."--Pub. desc. "At the end of the First World War, countries across Europe participated in an unprecedented ritual in which a single, anonymous body was buried to symbolize the overwhelming trauma of the battlefields. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier explores the creation and reception of this symbolic national burial as an emblem for modern mourning.

What death has that is monumental, unexpected and collective, such is the subject of this work. He approaches collective deaths through a sociological perspective, the central question being: does not the death of a collective of men, in addition to the usual treatments, give rise to specific reactions and practices linked to the collective character of these deaths? From this point of view, this death would be collective because it generates an original treatment different from “ordinary” deaths. This research builds on a body of twenty major accidents have occurred on French territory 20th century. The oldest is that of the fire of the Bazar de la Charité in 1897, the deadliest those of the Courrières mines in 1906 and the rupture of the Malpasset dam in 1959, the most recent that of the fire of the Mont tunnel. -Blanc in 1999.Social dangers, emotional reactions, mourning rituals and the construction of a collective memory are studied. Today collective deaths can no longer be explained by divine vengeance or a furious Nature, it is human responsibility that is in question. This raises the almost insoluble problem of collective human responsibility, which is very complex in terms of law. From this stems the idea of an impossible passage, hence also the need for an over-ritualization and recurring forgetting.
