Abstract

In the present work, the Austrian story is the first time explicitly examined from a French perspective. The author first outlines the relevant directions of the French historical scholarship and subsequently describes important people (Maria Theresa and Joseph II) and events (the creation of the Empire of Austria / abolition of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, Revolution of 1848 and compensation Austria-Hungary).

Abstract

This concise reference covers the diverse roots of Arabs in America, tracing the changing face of this community from the 19th century until today. This timely study explores the history of this multifaceted people from their traditions, to their religious beliefs, to the role women play in society, their roots in war torn countries, and the impact of the War on Terrorism on their collective psyche. Abstract

“Long live the Reds, down with the Whites! Long live Ledru-Rollin! Bonaparte to the guillotine! Down with the Chouans!”. These cries made in October 1850 by grape pickers from the Dole area are one of the many traces that Pierre Merlin collected in archives that have been little-studied until now to write the living history of the democratic learning in Jura between 1848 and the end of the 19th century. From the intense political struggles around 1848 to the establishment of the Republic and beyond, the book describes the formation of a democratic opinion that is illuminated by trajectories of emblematic republicans and socialists such as Louis-Étienne Jousserandot and Jean-Paul Mazaroz.

Abstract

"The British Industrial Revolution has long been seen as the spark for modern, global industrialization and sustained economic growth. Indeed the origins of economic history, as a discipline, lie in 19th-century European and North American attempts to understand the foundation of this process. In this book, William J. Ashworth questions some of the orthodoxies concerning the history of the industrial revolution and offers a deep and detailed reassessment of the subject that focuses on the State and its role in the development of key British manufactures. In particular, he explores the role of State regulation and protectionism in nurturing Britain's negligible early manufacturing base. Taking a long view, from the mid 17th century through to the 19th century, the analysis weaves together a vast range of factors to provide one of the fullest analyses of the industrial revolution, and one that places it firmly within a global context, showing that the Industrial Revolution was merely a short moment within a much larger and longer global trajectory. This book is an important intervention in the debates surrounding modern industrial history will be essential reading for anyone interested in global and comparative economic history and the history of globalization."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Abstract

"In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, most countries in Europe and English-speaking countries outside Europe experienced a fertility transition, where fertility fell from high levels to relatively low levels. England and the other English-speaking countries experienced this from the 1870s, while fertility in Australia began to fall in the 1880s.This book investigates the fertility transition in Tasmania, the second settled colony of Australia, using both statistical evidence and historical sources. The book examines detailed evidence from the 1904 New South Wales Royal Commission into the Fall in the Birth Rate, which the Commissioners regarded as applying not only to NSW, but to every state in Australia. Many theories have been proposed as to why fertility declined at this time: theories of economic and social development; economic theories; diffusion theories; the spread of secularisation; increased availability of artificial methods of contraception; and changes in the rates of infant and child mortality. The role of women in the fertility transition has generally been ignored. The investigation concludes that fertility declined in Tasmania in the late 19th century in a period of remarkable social and economic transformation, with industrialisation, urbanisation, improvements in transport and communication, increasing levels of education and opportunities for social mobility. One of the major social changes was in the status and role of women, who became the driving force behind the fertility decline."

Abstract

Abstract

This book examines the social construction of legal relations between people and things in Brazil during the 19th century through the analysis of court cases discussing dominion and possession over slaves and land. The chapters address topics such as the role of social recognition in situations of possession, the process of delegitimizing acts of land usage from indigenous peoples, dependent persons and women, and the widespread illegal acquisition of slaves and land.
