Ondanks onze gigantische knowhow blijven we in ons werk vermijdbare fouten maken. De reden is simpel: de omvang en complexiteit van onze kennis zijn zó groot, dat we die niet altijd juist en veilig kunnen toepassen. We zijn langer in opleiding, specialiseren ons meer en meer, gebruiken steeds geavanceerdere technologieën... en toch blijven we fouten maken. 

Atul Gawande pleit voor de checklist als bescheiden maar efficiënte methode om fouten in het werk te voorkomen.
