This book provides the practising ophthalmologist and surgeon with up-to-date information on the use of multifocal intraocular lenses to eliminate pseudophakic presbyopia. Guidance is provided on types and models of intraocular lens, indications, selection of patients, implantation, neuroadaptation, and complications and their avoidance. A key goal is to enable the practitioner to select the best lens for the individual patient, taking into account special circumstances. In addition, the results achieved to date with different lenses are analyzed and advice is given on the management of expectations. The authors are acknowledged international experts who draw upon their own experience and the peer-reviewed literature to provide the practitioner with cutting-edge information and evidence-based guidance.

Dental implant materials are advancing in the fusion of various scientific fields. Surface modification technologies for implants have been applied to titanium at the micro-level for about four decades. Now, implant surfaces are being topographically and chemically modified at both the micro- and nano-level. The modification techniques are altering other metals and ceramics, making these materials more biocompatible. Materials for abutments in dental implant systems appear to depend on implant–abutment connection structures. Biomechanical factors, such as friction and preload, influence the development of the abutment materials. Additionally, the surfaces of the abutment materials are important in the soft-tissue attachment, which is being actively investigated. As dental implants have to be functional in human bodies for a long time, numerous materials are being clinically tested as implant-supported restorations. The Special Issue, “Dental Implant Materials 2019”, introduces the creative works of scientists on the current advancements in the field of materials for implant dentistry.

When Sir Harold Ridley implanted the first intraocular lens in 1949, he irrevocably coupled lens extraction with refractive surgery. The purpose of the implant remains essentially refractive to this day. However, we are now witnessing an unprecedented flowering of technology for pseudophakia. Elimination of defocus and astigmatism, implantation of accommodative intraocular lenses and pseudophakic correction of higher-order aberrations require systematic preoperative evaluation and meticulous surgical technique. Surgeons must meet the challenges of understanding and implementing this new technology if they are to ride the coming demographic tidal wave of baby boomers desiring excellent vision without relying on spectacles. Refractive Lens Surgery - Represents a compilation of the best cutting edge practices for achieving success with refractive lens exchange - Provides the essential information you need to succeed during the current renaissance of intraocular lens technology - Serves as both a textbook and a reference guide to this exciting and rapidly growing segment of ophthalmology From mastering biometry and lens power calculations in eyes that have had prior keratorefractive surgery to learning the latest micro-incision lens extraction techniques, this book is an invaluable resource that makes sense of the myriad of new developments in this field.
