This special issue of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences contains a collection of articles by colleagues of Antonius (Ton) Gerardus Rolink (19/04/1953-06/08/2017) and honors Ton's life and profound knowledge of and huge contribution to science. Ton participated in an FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network called DECIDE, and partners have submitted articles for this Special Issue. Scientists outside this network have also submitted articles. The articles examine various aspects of how the hematopoietic stem-cell gives rise to the different types of blood and immune cells. These include decision-making by the hematopoietic stem cell and the importance of controlling events within cells and the niches the cell resides in. New insights into these processes at the basic scientific level have given rise to an emerging new model for the development of blood cells. In turn, changes to our understanding of this process have led to new and exciting propositions regarding what goes wrong during the early stages of the development of leukemia.

This book covers a comprehensive update on acute and chronic leukemia. In 54 chapters, authors introduce research progress and clinical trials of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL), acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The last decade has seen the integration of genetic and clinical information to determine the prognosis and treatment strategies. This book provides practitioners, researchers and graduate students of Hematology and Hematopathology a comprehensive update on the pathobiology, genomics, classification, diagnosis, monitoring, prognostication and therapy of both acute and chronic leukemias.

Make sure you are thoroughly prepared to work in a clinical lab. Rodak's Hematology: Clinical Principles and Applications, 6th Edition uses hundreds of full-color photomicrographs to help you understand the essentials of hematology. This new edition shows how to accurately identify cells, simplifies hemostasis and thrombosis concepts, and covers normal hematopoiesis through diseases of erythroid, myeloid, lymphoid, and megakaryocytic origins. Easy to follow and understand, this book also covers key topics including: working in a hematology lab; complementary testing areas such as flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular diagnostics; the parts and functions of the cell; and laboratory testing of blood cells and body fluid cells. UPDATED nearly 700 full-color illustrations and photomicrographs make it easier for you to visualize hematology concepts and show what you'll encounter in the lab, with images appearing near their mentions in the text to minimize flipping pages back and forth. UPDATED content throughout text reflects latest information on hematology. Instructions for lab procedures include sources of possible errors along with comments. Hematology instruments are described, compared, and contrasted. Case studies in each chapter provide opportunities to apply hematology concepts to real-life scenarios. Hematology/hemostasis reference ranges are listed on the inside front and back covers for quick reference. A bulleted summary makes it easy for you to review the important points in every chapter. Learning objectives begin each chapter and indicate what you should achieve, with review questions appearing at the end. A glossary of key terms makes it easy to find and learn definitions. NEW! Additional content on cell structure and receptors helps you learn to identify these organisms. NEW! New chapter on Introduction to Hematology Malignancies provides and overview of diagnostic technology and techniques used in the lab.

This monograph summarizes the large amount of experimental data accumulated during many years of studying the functions of the blood system and its regulatory mechanisms under the action of diverse morbific factors within the models of pathological processes (e.g. immobilization stress, blood loss, inflammation, cytostatic and radiation myelosuppressions, experimental encephalopathies, neuroses, and spontaneous leucosis). These data are is analyzed with the understanding that hematopoietic tissue is an integrated system that can react to the challenges of both the internal and external environments. This analysis helped develop the theory of hematopoiesis control describing the regularities in the work of basic subdivisions of the hematopoietic tissue under normal and pathological conditions, as well as the performance and interaction of the local and long-ranged control systems. The monograph is recommended for Physiologists, Pathophysiologists, Hematologists, Oncologists, Pharmacologists and other professionals.

This book is quick guide on the hematopoietic stem cell transplant (SCT), also called bone marrow transplant (BMT) - an evolving field of hematology and hemato-oncology. This book covers the various types of stem cell transplants like autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplants, indications, ways of doing a transplant, and stem cell transplants basic principles. Written in a question-answer format, readers will find it more interesting as one question sequentially leads to another. This book explains the complications of SCT in individual chapters along with the biology of T cells which are the most important cells involved in the success of SCT This book is beneficial to the budding hematologists, oncologists, and postgraduates interested in SCT and helps students in their exams. The book would be helpful for readers globally as SCT is a procedure done worldwide and is an ever-increasing field for treating various benign and malignant hematological diseases.
