Ce livre en hommage à Pierre Monbeig n'est pas un de ces ouvrages de « Mélanges », où les disciples rassemblent, pour en faire l'hommage à un Maître, leurs articles sur des sujets variés, plus ou moins en rapport avec ceux qu'il a traités au cours de sa carrière. D'abord parce que Pierre Monbeig avait explicitement refusé que l'on en organisât un de son vivant, préférant suggérer l'organisation d'un colloque sur le thème central de sa vie de chercheur, les frontières pionnières. Ensuite parce que nous avons préféré mettre l'accent sur l'homme et son œuvre, car cet homme et cette oeuvre le méritent. Il était de bon ton naguère de dire qu'il avait eu un rôle majeur d'orientation, d'administration et d'organisation de la recherche, comme directeur scientifique du Cnrs, comme directeur de l'Institut des Hautes Etudes de l'Amérique Latine, du DEA Amérique latine, des Cahiers des Amériques latines, mais qu'il n'avait guère écrit. En préparant ce livre nous avons eu la surprise de constater que son œuvre écrite était loin d'être aussi mince qu'il le disait lui-même, et qu'il valait la peine de la recenser, de la relire, de la resituer. De ces préoccupations est sortie la structure de ce livre.

This reference work delivers an interdisciplinary, applied spatial and geographical approach to the study of languages and linguistics. This work includes chapters and sections related to language origins, diffusion, conflicts, policies, education/instruction, representation, technology, regions, and mapping. Also addressed is the mapping of languages and linguistic diversity, on language in the context of politics, on the relevance of language to cultural identity, on language minorities and endangered languages, and also on language and the arts and non-human language and communication. This reference work looks at the subject matter and contributors to the disciplines and programs in the social sciences and humanities, and the dearth of materials on languages and linguistics.
