At a time when traditional funding is diminishing and costs increasing, the need to look to new external sources of money is now central to survival for many organizations. New avenues of funding often demand a new outlook, and old ways of thinking can prove to be barriers to success. This book looks not only at methods for raising funds, providing practical steps in preparing for new funding initiatives, but also at the attitudes and mind-sets that form part of the whole picture. The volume is concise and accessible, with plans of action, bullet lists and diagrams for ease of consultation.

This open access book contributes to research on the ascendance of neoliberalism in Canada through the vantage point of professional fundraising in the 1990s and 2000s. Fifty high-ranking fundraisers from across Canada were interviewed through 2008 and 2009 about changes they had witnessed since starting their careers. Fundraising as an occupation was burgeoning in this period in response to the devolution of state responsibility across the major domains of nonprofit activity: education, health care, social services, the arts, recreation, overseas humanitarian activities, and environmental protection. Welfare state retrenchment left the nonprofit and voluntary sector competing for private sources of funding with the help of these newly hired expert staff. As fundraisers worked to instill a culture of philanthropy, while targeting the ultra-rich and advocating for tax-favourable treatment of major gifts, they became both products and promoters of the neoliberal political and cultural reconstruction of Canadian society.

A compellingly-narrated, thrillingly-portrayed account account of an epic motorcycle journey taken in 2014 from Singapore to Sweden over 100 days. Philip's aim to increase breast cancer awareness makes it more than the run-of-the-mill adventure holiday, but a ride with a cause. Written as an internal monologue, much in keeping with long motorcycle rides where hours are spent alone in a helmet with one's thoughts, this chronicle runs through 17 countries and the entire sweep of the Silk Road. The motorcycles give the author an immediate access to different peoples and cultures, with a unique chance to meet breast cancer patients across different Asian countries. Time pressures in order to meet collaborators leads to mental collapse and near failure. As he falters from a mental breakdown and perseveres, it makes this journey more about cancer survival than ever intended.

Today, nearly every charitable nonprofit, advocacy group, professional group, and politician relies on the philanthropy of others. Whether it's a private college, a hospital or museum, a lobbying group, or a local, low-budget food shelf, operational and marketing costs and capital investments are often largely underwritten through the generous support of donors. Nonprofits need some people to write $25 checks on a regular basis, and they need others to make six-figure pledges. The bad news: Since the economic collapse of 2008, getting people to part with precious dollars has become ever more difficult. The good news is that people are still inclined to be generous to organizations, causes, and candidates they believe in. Effective Frontline Fundraising provides the information you'll need to set up and manage an effective development team capable of consistently raising gifts, both large and small. Effective Frontline Fundraising will not only teach those skills for getting the gift you want in the short run, but it will also show how to build a meaningful, long-lasting relationship between your organization and your donor base. This book: Shows how to keep that organizational lifeblood—cash—running through your vital operations Explains how to create a firm foundation from which to solicit funds Provides examples of successful and unsuccessful fundraising messages and plans Teaches you how to ask confidently for gifts from $25 to $1,000,000 … or more!

Alexander von Kotzebue investigates the interdependency of charitable giving, fundraising, and governmental intervention. His study comprises a literature survey, a model of the donor-fundraiser relation, and finally, an econometric analysis of the impact of fundraising on giving behaviour. The survey introduces theoretical approaches to donor motivation, groups them according to their central assumptions, and assesses their empirical relevance. The theoretical analysis takes for granted that fundraising is an integral part of the giving process, and models the potential conflict concerning the amount of fundraising exerted. Fundraising typically displays an ambiguous effect on donor utility. The empirical analysis employs two extensive datasets to investigate this complex donor-fundraiser relation, while establishing a convincing link of donor-level data to non-profit financial data. Content Collective Goods, Voluntary Contributions, and Intermediation: A Literature Survey A Theoretical Approach to Strategic Donor-Fundraiser Interaction An Empirical Investigation of Donor-Fundraiser Interaction Target Groups Researchers and students in the fields of microeconomics and econometrics, interested in public finance and game theory Members of non-profit organisations and fundraising experts About the Author Alexander von Kotzebue served as research assistant in Erlangen-Nuremberg and at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), where he received his PhD in Economics.

Currently, a new potential paragon of fundraising and financing, in particular crowdfunding (CF) attracts a lot of attention. Basically, CF is an open call for capital, mainly via the internet, where the desired campaign can be evaluated and financially supported by a large group of individuals, the crowd. The matchmaking process between campaign creators and potential investors is mainly established by a standardized CF platform (CFP). Scientific discourse on CF is still nascent, since existing studies and papers focus on the potential of CF and its basic principles. Florian Danmayr addresses crowdfunding platforms as object of his analysis and contributes to the body of literature by enhancing knowledge on the composition of the CFP market. Contents Basic Principles of Web 2.0 From Crowdsourcing to Crowdfunding Types of Crowdfunding The Market of Crowdfunding Platforms Crowdfunding as a Source of Finance Motivational and Key Success Factors Legal Limitations of and Critique on Crowdfunding Target Groups Researchers, lecturers, and students in the fields of economics, esp. finance, controlling, information systems, and new media Managers and entrepreneurs The Author Ing. Discourse Description presents in one convenient volume a variety of approaches to text description that have been proposed in the linguistic literature in the last decade or so. The book is organized to make it easy to understand and compare the various approaches. Since all of the researchers are analyzing the same text, their differences are readily seen. The text they analyze is a letter, mailed in bulk by a Washington-based lobbying organization which is supported by contributions from donors. Far from simply informing the readers, the letter seeks to appeal to them on many le
