This book offers a thorough and detailed analysis of the exemplary dictionary of the Mots des Poilus (The language of the "Poilus") by Pierre Rézeau (2018). On the basis of some 15,000 citations which illustrate the extensive nomenclature of the dictionary, the fourteen authors emphasise the linguistic diversity of a country which was still entirely plurilingual, shedding light on the variation displayed by French dialects, regional varieties, argot and literary writing. The book details the impact of the Great War on the history of written French through an analysis of the daily correspondence between soldiers and their families, which amounts to almost ten billion letters written over a period of four years. A new and sometimes unexpected portrait of the French diasystem at the beginning of the twentieth century emerges, revealing numerous lexical, grapho-phonetic and morphosyntactic particularities. The linguistic choices which frequently diverge from those found in contemporary correspondence written in Italian or German are described in a complementary section. The appendix contains texts which supplement the chronological description of the Mots des Poilus, and a detailed analysis of the letters written by the wife of a Breton soldier provides an overview of the grapho-phonetic and morphosyntactic characteristics typically found in the letters.

Long description: L’émergence « du nouveau » est actuellement devenue un leitmotiv des littératures africaines d’aujourd’hui. Nous assistons à un discours prônant le renouvellement dans tous les domaines de la culture. Il désigne un essor intellectuel avant tout marqué par la volonté de sortir de l’image communément propagée de la victimisation, par la volonté de décoloniser les esprits et de décentrer la pensée en se réappropriant son histoire. Ce que les auteurs de ce volume cherchent à démontrer, c’est que, pour la littérature africaine le renouvellement et l’émergence passent avant tout par un changement de perspectives. Les œuvres des écrivains et écrivaines noirs dont il est question dans ce volume se réapproprient l’histoire en la recréant et réinventant par la littérature. Celle-ci permet de mettre en relation le monde contemporain avec le passé, le continent avec le monde et de faire émerger l’homme dans la diversité des origines, des masques et des cultures. Biographical note: Lydia Bauer est privat-docente de littérature et culture romanes à l’Université de Potsdam en Allemagne. Ses domaines de recherche et d’enseignement se concentrent sur les littératures française et francophone du XIXe au XXIe siècle, et en particulier sur les thèmes suivants : corps et textualité, écriture féminine, image et texte, littérature et systèmes de connaissance. Till R. Kuhnle est professeur en littérature comparée à l’Université de Limoges et directeur de l’équipe EHIC. Ses principaux axes de recherche sont la pensée existentielle, la théorie de la littérature et de l’esthétique (actuellement : discours contre-hégémoniques et hétérotopies), le roman européen de l’entre-deux-guerres, les littératures d’expression française.

The process of setting norms for language and language use is closely related to critique of language and its use. The German term Sprachnormenkritik as yet has no equivalent in English, French, Italian, or Croatian linguistics. Notwithstanding, the concept of ›critique of language norms‹, or aspects of it, have been debated in all these languages for centuries. Normierung der Sprache und ihres Gebrauchs ist eng verbunden mit einer Kritik an der Sprache und ihrem Gebrauch. Der Terminus der Sprachnormenkritik hat weder im Englischen noch im Französischen oder Italienischen und auch nicht im Kroatischen eine ausdrucksseitige Entsprechung. Das Konzept der ›Sprachnormenkritik‹ bzw. bestimmte Teilkomponenten sind dessen ungeachtet im Englischen, Französischen, Italienischen und Kroatischen seit Jahrhunderten in der Diskussion.

Adopting the theoretical framework of the minimalist program, this study of syntactic limitations on complement configuration investigates the link between thematic external arguments and case. Using evidence from pronominal, psychological experiencer, and inalienable constructions, it argues that both accusative and dative are structural cases in French and that this duality is reflected in a parallel limit on argument projection.
