Abstract

In the 1860s and 1870s, luxury river boats brought U. S. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes; financier Jay Gould; writers Oscar Wilde and Walt Whitman; and actor Maurice Barrymore, the father of John, Ethel, and Lionel, to "Queen City of the Cypress"-Jefferson, Texas. Among lesser known visitors was Abe Rothschild and his apparent bride, Bessie, dressed in fashionable clothes and wearing many diamonds. The couple went to an unusual midwinter picnic in the woods, and two weeks later the body of Bessie was found in the woods shot through the head. From the three trials that followed came a folk drama, "The Diamond Bessie Murder Trial" presented annually in Jefferson as part of a historical pilgrimage. Los Pastores, (The Shepherds), is a shepherd's play having to do with the epiphany of the Christ child, arises from a tradition reaching back to the Middle Ages. The Pastores tradition is oral, either created or creatively adapted by the Franciscans in Mexico, and performed at Mission San Jose in San Antonio and elsewhere in the Southwest between Christmas and New Year's. In addition to the exploration of these two plays, this folklore miscellany contains essays on the decoration of graves in Central Texas with sea shells; camp meetings with vigorous preaching and religious seizures; Black Easter-April 14, 1935-during the Dust Bowl, when the people of the Texas Panhandle watched a rolling black cloudbank bearing down on them; Semaña Santa (Holy Week) in Seville, Spain; marriage customs in Thessaly and Macedonia; the Johannesburg mine dances, and much more.

Abstract

By defining folklore as artistic communication in small groups, Dan Ben-Amos led the discipline of Folklore in new directions. In Folklore Concepts, Henry Glassie and Elliott Oring have curated a selection of Ben-Amos's groundbreaking essays that explore folklore as a category in cultural communication and as a subject of scholarly research. Ben-Amos's work is well-known for sparking lively debate that often centers on why his definition intrinsically acknowledges tradition rather than expresses its connection forthright. Without tradition among people, there would be no art or communication, and tradition cannot accomplish anything on its own--only people can. Ben-Amos's focus on creative communication in communities is woven into the themes of the theoretical essays in this volume, through which he advocates for a better future for folklore scholarship. Folklore Concepts traces Ben-Amos's consistent efforts over the span of his career to review and critique the definitions, concepts, and practices of Folklore in order to build the field's intellectual history. In examining this history, Folklore Concepts answers foundational questions about what folklorists are doing, how they are doing it, and why.

Abstract

International folkloristics is a worldwide discipline in which scholars study various forms of folklore ranging from myth, folktale, and legend to custom and belief. In this volume, twenty classic essays, beginning with a piece by Jacob Grimm, reveal the evolving theoretical underpinnings of folkloristics from its nineteenth century origins to its academic coming-of-age in the twentieth century.

Abstract

Why the Kalevala and not the Kanteletar? The Kalevala Society's 101st Yearbook maps the processes of canonizing and marginalizing in traditions, cultural heritage and literature by focusing on the fringes of cultural ideals and norms. How and using which criteria have researchers, artists and materials of cultural production been lifted up or pushed aside? What kind of nations would have emerged if writing the nation had rested on the alternatives: the marginal rather than the canonical genres? A look into the blind spots and fringes of culture and research reveals the endless movement in and between hierarchically positioned spheres of culture. Listening to margins changes not only the canon but also the idea of canon.

Abstract

This comparative anthology showcases the rich and mutually intertwined folklore of three ethno-religious communities from northern Iraq: Aramaic-speaking ('Syriac') Christians, Kurdish Muslims and-to a lesser extent-Aramaic-speaking Jews. The first volume contains several introductory chapters on language, folkore motifs and narrative style, followed by samples of glossed texts in each language variety. The second volume is the anthology proper, presenting folklore narratives in several distinct varieties of North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic and Northern and Central Kurdish. The stories are accompanied by English translations. The material includes different genres such as folktales, legends, fables and anecdotes, and is organised into seven thematic units. The folkloristic material of these three communities is shared to a large extent. The anthology is, therefore, a testament to the intimate and long-standing relations between these three ethno-religious communities-relations that existed in a multilingual environment centuries before the modern era of nationalism.

Abstract

"This book presents current discussions on the concept of genre. It introduces innovative, multidisciplinary approaches to contemporary and historical genres, their roles in cultural discourse, how they change, and their relations to each other. The reader is guided into the discussion surrounding this key concept and its history through a general introduction, followed by eighteen chapters that represent a variety of discursive practices as well as analytic methods from several scholarly traditions. This volume will have wide appeal to several academic audiences within the humanities, both in Finland and abroad, and will especially be of interest to scholars of folklore, language and cultural expression."

Abstract

THESE two volumes are a reproduction, on a larger scale, of a work written in 1894, by Mr. W. Crooke, of the Bengal Civil Service. The author employed the interval, so he tells us, in collecting fresh information in the course of the Ethnographical Survey of the North-west Provinces of India, the results of which will be separately published. This new edition contains a mass of most important and extremely interesting matter, ably dealt with by a thoroughly competent authority, in whom are combined the rare qualities of careful and accurate research with an intimate knowledge of the habits and customs of the people of Northern India. The value of the work is further enhanced by excellently executed photographs of shrines and other sacred places, a complete bibliography, and a carefully-prepared index.
