Abstract

"It's dark in here, but brilliant. Tim Johnston is as wise as he is original, and his stories are impossible to forget."-David Sedaris Includes stories of loss, absence, and the devastating effects of chance - of what happens when the unthinkable bad luck of other people, of other towns, becomes our bad luck, our town. ""This is white-knuckle prose; it means what it says and it says what it means. Not that I count words, but when an image can be etched in fewer than ten, I sit up and take notice. When an image is limned in fewer than five words, I pretty near shiver. The stories in Irish

Abstract

A chilling novel set in 19th century England. It tells the story of Lydia Gwitt, whose accomplishments include murder, adultery and theft - all by the tender age of 35. Author Wilkie Collins takes the unusual perspective in Armadale of telling most of the story through Lydia's eyes. A good read, especially if you are a fan of Collins previous novels, which include The Moonstone and The Woman in White.

Abstract

The mother dies by random accident. The father's friend, swayed by the crudest concept of tragedy...the simple fall of men from whatever heights they have achieved, kills himself. These are the events that provoke the father to abandon his orderly life as an English professor in the kingdom of a small college campus, taking his son to teach the boy, with travels and a trunkful of tools, about the other kingdoms. Literature is too redemptive! That is the father's theme in the exuberant conversation he carries on with his son as they travel back through the places of the father's past and onward to places where both are strangers, making their living by fixing broken things. The father gives all of his sparkling education to this son, teaching him geometry on sandy beaches, botany in fields. Above all, he theatrically quotes poetry and literature, always making his case against the artificial order of literature, always warning his son against expectations of order. The son accepts the father's invaluable love and lessons until the others he meets and he himself being to qualify, reshape, sift his father's lessons. Narrated by the son, this novel of action and quiet places and startling conversation shows a creative vision of how fathers and sons can grow together and separate without the clash of life-stunting conflict.

Abstract

James Baker Hall's blackly comic coming-of-age novel has been denied, by unfortunate circumstances surrounding its original 1964 publication, its rightful place alongside classics such as Catcher in the Rye and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in the canon of essential late-twentieth-century American fiction. Set in Lexington, Kentucky, the story unfolds through the eyes of thirteen-year-old Yates Paul. He becomes consumed with revelations about his inattentive father's loneliness, his grandmother's stormy relationship with his boisterous alcoholic uncle, and the frustration of being the best
