Abstract

This volume presents the results of Bulgarian and international tourism research, and brings together selected papers from the international conference "Tourism and Innovations" held in Varna, Bulgaria, in 2018. It contains theoretical and empirical approaches towards various aspects of tourism concerning both innovations in tourism development and in foreign languages education. As a whole, the book presents innovative solutions and processes in tourism, including management and staff training, provoked by today's opportunities and challenges for future tourism development. The first part is dedicated to issues in tourism innovation, ranging from those provoked from the changing global environment and tourism demand, through to social innovations concerning tourism products and human resources management. The second section of the book deals with traditions and innovations in foreign language education oriented to managers, operational staff and decision-makers in tourism.

Abstract

Emerging from more than two decades of research in the field and in the archives, the essays collected here explore the multifaceted topic of the Fijian firewalking ceremony, the vilavilairevo. The collection examines the intersection of the intertwined topics of cultural property, reproduction of tradition, and change with issues of (post)colonial representation, authenticity, and ethnic identity. The essays advance new insights on the tourist gaze and the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and pose serious questions regarding the role of digital and social media as tools for preserving cultural legacies and extending traditional cultural worlds into new domains. Focusing on the response of the Sawau tribe of the island of Beqa to the commodification of the vilavilairevo as their iconic practice, this essay collection ultimately illuminates how the Christian cultural dynamics and unprecedented dogmatic schism surrounding the vilavilairevo spectacle are reshaping local notions of heritage, social sentiment, and social capital.

Abstract

The history of the Wild West has long been fictionalized in novels, films, and television shows. Catering to these popular representations, towns across America have created tourist sites connecting such tales with historical monuments. Yet these attractions stray from known histories in favor of the embellished past visitors expect to see and serve to craft a cultural memory that reinforces contemporary ideologies. In Mythic Frontiers, Daniel Maher illustrates how aggrandized versions of the past, especially those of the "American frontier," have been used to turn a profit. These imagined historical sites have effectively silenced the violent, oppressive, colonizing forces of manifest destiny and elevated principal architects of it to mythic heights. Examining the frontier complex in Fort Smith, Arkansas--where visitors are greeted at a restored brothel and the reconstructed courtroom and gallows of "Hanging Judge" Isaac Parker feature prominently--Maher warns that creating a popular tourist narrative and disconnecting cultural heritage tourism from history minimizes the devastating consequences of imperialism, racism, and sexism and relegitimizes the privilege bestowed upon white men.
