This volume brings into dialogue current research interests in literary studies and linguistics that work with Pierre Bourdieu's concepts and theory. In light of the twentieth anniversary of the death of the French sociologist (2022), it thus, firstly, carries out a survey of previous research and, secondly, stakes out the future potential of German studies oriented toward Bourdieu. Zwei Jahrzehnte nach seinem Tod ist das Werk des Soziologen Pierre Bourdieu aus vielen Geistes-, Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften nicht mehr wegzudenken. Wie aber sieht es mit der Anwendung der Bourdieuschen Konzepte und Theorien in der Germanistik aus?Der Band bilanziert den Ertrag der entsprechenden sprach- und literaturwissenschaftlichen Forschung. Zugleich werden die Zukunftspotentiale einer an Bourdieu orientierten Germanistik abgesteckt. Dabei geht es auch um die Frage, inwiefern Bourdieus Arbeiten einen gemeinsamen produktiven Bezugsrahmen für einen stärkeren Austausch zwischen Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft bieten können.

This book offers an in-depth examination of Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework. The book is not just a collection of more or less critical remarks but constitutes a coherent whole, underpinned by an original analytical framework. This conceptual apparatus makes it possible to present some alternative solutions to the theoretical problems under consideration. The book goes largely against the grain of views that are dominant in the literature on Bourdieu. Therefore, its conclusions may be surprising to many a reader. The book demonstrates that Bourdieu's well-known theory of 'capital' forms is untenable, resembling more an illegitimate metaphor rather than a scientific concept. In a similar vein, the Bourdesian class theory should be largely regarded as a variant of social stratification rather than class. There are many theoretical and empirical problems with Bourdieu's theory of social and cultural reproduction as well. There is more to the above criticisms than meets the eye. The point is that many weaknesses of Bourdieu's style of theorising seem to stem from his intellectual dependence upon structuralism, especially in Claude Lévi-Strauss' version. It is this affinity that accounts for such features of Bourdieu's approach as its essentialism, formalism and epistemic idealism. The book will be of interest primarily to students of Bourdieu's many and varied contributions to social theory. In view of Bourdieu's immense influence, it will also hold interest to critical scholars in political science, economic sociology and political philosophy.--

[2014] L’œuvre multiple et complexe de Pierre Bourdieu a suscité, de par le monde, de très nombreuses interprétations et interpellations. C’est cet univers de discussions que Loïc Wacquant a reconstitué lors d’un séminaire tenu à l’Université de Chicago en 1987 puis au cours d’échanges serrés avec Pierre Bourdieu entre 1988 et 1991. Invitation à la sociologie réflexive livre les enseignements de ces échanges transatlantiques selon trois modalités complémentaires. Après une première partie exposant l’architecture conceptuelle et thématique des travaux de Pierre Bourdieu, Loïc Wacquant, au cours d’une interrogation méthodique nourrie de la lecture de l’œuvre et de ses critiques, permet non seulement au sociologue de répondre aux objections qui lui ont été adressées, mais aussi de livrer, plus clairement que jamais, les fondements philosophiques et épistémologiques de sa démarche. Poussé et porté par cette interrogation, Pierre Bourdieu est conduit à révéler jusqu’aux implications éthiques et civiques de son travail et à réfléchir sur ses effets sociaux. En présentant, dans la troisième partie, le préambule à son séminaire de recherche à l’École des hautes études en sciences sociales, Pierre Bourdieu nous fait entrer dans son atelier, ce laboratoire où s’élabore une œuvre à laquelle ce livre constitue la meilleure introduction.
