Abstract

In this book, the authors present current research in the study of the evolution and behavior, breeding strategies, migration and spread of disease within the bird species. Topics discussed in this compilation include sex determination in birds; structure and function of the avian respiratory system, with discussion regarding its predisposition to injury by particulates and pathogenic microorganisms; distribution and dispersion of coccidia in wild passerines of the Americas; an animal geography of the dominant urban avian scavenger in contrasting case studies; recent infectious diseases or the

Abstract

Seeking common principles of social evolution in different taxonomic groups, the contributors to this volume discuss eighteen groups of birds and mammals for which long-term field studies have been carried out. They examine how social organization is shaped by the interaction between proximate ecological pressures and culture"--the social traditions already in place and shaped by local and phylogenetic history.Originally published in 1987.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Abstract

Current Ornithology publishes authoritative, up-to-date, scholarly reviews of topics selected from the full range of current research in avian biology. Topics cover the spectrum from the molecular level of organization to population biology and community ecology. The series seeks especially to review (1) fields in which an abundant recent literature will benefit from synthesis and organization, or (2) newly emerging fields that are gaining recognition as the result of recent discoveries or shifts in perspective, or (3) fields in which students of vertebrates may benefit from comparisons of birds with other classes. All chapters are invited, and authors are chosen for their leadership in the subjects under review. Current Ornithology Volume 17 1. Impaired predator evasion in the life-history of birds: behavioral and physiological adaptations to reduced flight ability – J. Lind, S. Jakobsson and C. Kullberg 2. Dietary Calcium Availability and Reproduction in Birds- S. J. Reynolds and C. Perrins   3. Seasonal Metabolic Variation in Birds: Functional and Mechanistic Correlates- D. L. Swanson   4. Assessing Cause-Effect Relationships in Environmental Accidents: Harlequin Ducks and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill- J. A. Wiens, R. H. Day, S. M. Murphy, and M. A. Fraker.
