Arquitectura Tradicional Portuguesa, de Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira e Fernando Galhano, reúne pela primeira vez um número considerável de pequenas monografias sobre a habitado regional, dispersas por várias revistas por vezes de difícil consulta, enquadrando-as por um texto estruturante que as inscreve no plano geral da arquitectura regional do País. Desse quadro global destacam-se duas categorias básicas: a casa de rés-do-chão e andar, e a casa terrea, correspondentes a outras tantas áreas geográficas fundamentais, Norte e Sul. A casa urbana apresenta-se também sob duas formas principais: a casa burguesa e mesteiral, vertical, esguia e alta, de função híbrida de residência-loja; e o palácio, de fachada larga, rés-do-chão e andar nobre, que repete em versáo citadina o solar rural. Em muitos casos essa arquitectura ficava á margem do conforto e concepção racional da orgânica doméstica; era um prolongamento da lavoura, em que esta importava mais do que as próprias pessoas. Porém, muitos aspectos e elementos dessa velha arquitectura constituíam soluções ajustadas, que poderiam adaptar-se, com plena razão funcional e estética, a novos conceitos habitacionais.
