The cantatas of Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864), spanning his middle and late life, were written in response to royal and civic commissions to celebrate dynastic events and to praise the deeds of famous men. Their festive nature is indicated in the titles: festival song, festival greeting, festival hymn, homage. Like a continuation of the 18th-century tradition of patronage, the more famous Meyerbeer became, the more his services were required by public authorities. Although a burden to him, a...

""This collection of essays by leading scholars explores sacred vocal polyphony from the 12th through the late 16th centuries. The emphasis is less on broad stylistic or historical trends than on the insights offered by particular compositions and on the tools of critical interpretation. For instance, Margaret Bent considers the ways in which informed 14th-century readers might have understood the several simultaneous Latin and musical 'texts' of a motet preserved in the Roman de Fauvel, and how their ways of understanding relate to the current practice of critical analysis of music. The fame of Giacomo Meyerbeer is associated preeminently with the operatic stage, but he wrote for the voice extensively in other genres as well, and produced a small body of carefully crafted religious works throughout his life that reveal the depth of his religious convictions, and also his ecumenical openness to all forms of religious devotion. While studying with the Abbé Vogler in Darmstadt, the young composer had opportunities to show off his skills and serious endeavours. These were ...

Lawrence Bennett provides a comprehensive study of the rich repertoire of accompanied vocal chamber music that entertained the imperial family in Vienna and their guests throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries. The cantata became a form of elite entertainment composed to amuse listeners during banquets or pay homage to members of the royal family during special occasions. Concentrating on Baroque cantatas composed in the Habsburg court, Bennett draws extensively on primary source material to explore the stylistic changes that occurred within the genre in the generations before Haydn an

Luigi Dallapiccola is widely considered a defining figure in twentieth-century Italian musical modernism, whose compositions bear passionate witness to the historical period through which he lived. In this book, Ben Earle focuses on three major works by the composer: the one-act operas Volo di notte ('Night Flight') and Il prigioniero ('The Prisoner'), and the choral Canti di prigionia ('Songs of Imprisonment'), setting them in the context of contemporary politics to trace their complex path from fascism to resistance. Earle also considers the wider relationship between musical modernism and Italian fascism, exploring the origins of musical modernism and investigating its place in the institutional structures created by Mussolini's regime. In doing so, he sheds new light on Dallapiccola's work and on the cultural politics of the early twentieth century to provide a history of musical modernism in Italy from the fin de siècle to the early Cold War.
