Eight years after the end of the Lebanese war, the municipal elections of 1998, the first since 1963, are perceived as a stake of representation by all social and political forces in the sense that they sanction in the short term the emergence new political staff in local authorities. They are also seen as a means of giving municipalities a role in local development, within the more general framework of the reconstruction of state structures and the return to civil peace. The re-establishment of municipal authorities through the ballot box immediately raised the question of changing the methods of exercising local power: Do they strengthen or call into question the processes underway at the national level? Are they producing new values ​​and representations of politics? Do the relationships that are forged between these newly elected officials and their constituents reproduce clientelist, bureaucratic, community-type forms of allegiance, or are they characterized by the emergence of another model of “citizenship”? What is the nature of the relationship between elected municipal officials and national elites (deputies, traditionally masters of local space), between municipal authorities and state services (decentralized bodies, responsible before the elections to directly administer the dissolved municipalities , but also delegations from ministries and bodies directly attached to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers)?Do local institutions and elected representatives act as mediators between the society they are supposed to represent and the national power? Consequently, do the forms of territorialisation of power specific to the Lebanese political regime in the post-war period allow the development of notabiliary strategies or do they favour the extension of militia practices? Finally, is the re-establishment of “local administration” (al-idaraal-mahalliyya) accompanied by new modes of public action? These questions were dealt with from three lines of thought: that of local representation, that of participation practices and that of negotiation mechanisms around the implementation of public policies within the municipal framework. This CERMOC book is the result of a one-and-a-half-year collective research program led by a team of sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, geographers and historians led by Agnès Favier. Some studies focus on cross-cutting themes based on a quantitative approach (questionnaire that covers all municipalities in Lebanon): the profiles of municipality presidents elected in 1998, the internal functioning of municipal councils, communication and communication practices. information of municipal authorities, the bipolar logics which characterize the re-composition of local power in a village of displaced persons (Joun) or the functioning of the federation of municipalities of the caza of Jbayl. Several interpretations emerge from this sociology of municipalities two years after the elections: the renewal of local political staff, the variety of strategies for legitimizing elected municipal officials, the still timid dynamism of municipal structures and the weaknesses of municipal autonomy, or even the legacy of war in the structures of local societies.

L'auteur de "Philippe le Bel" s'attache aujourd'hui à ce long siècle qui suivit la mort des derniers Capétiens. Mais fallait-il écrire l'histoire d'une guerre? Jean Favier montre que ce conflit n'est pas seulement phénomène en soi, il exprime les mouvements profonds qui animent la société médiévale: par-delà les batailles - où il arrive que le sort d'un royaume se joue en quelques quarts d'heure -, la guerre devient facteur déterminant des infléchissements de l'histoire dès lors que le noble et le clerc, le bourgeois et le paysan pensent et se comportent en fonction de cette guerre. Qu'elle soit réelle ou supposée, proche ou lointaine, voilà qui change peu cet horizon mental qu'est la guerre pour cinq générations qui ont su qu'elle faisait partie de leur vie. La guerre de Cent Ans a été le lot commun des individus comme des groupes humains, celui des féodaux encore pris dans leurs fidélités contractuelles, celui des officiers royaux découvrant le service de l'Etat à mesure qu'ils le conçoivent, celui de maîtres de l'Université que leurs engagements intellectuels mènent à des conflits qui n'étaient point les leurs. En un étonnant contrepoint où passent les visages renouvelés d'un Charles le Mauvais, d'un Bertrand du Guesclin, d'un Pierre Cauchon et de bien d'autres, Jean Favier fait jouer les thèmes divers qui s'appellent le nationalisme naissant, la réforme de l'Etat et l'unité de l'Eglise, le prix du blé et le salaire du maçon, l'influence parisienne et la force provinciale, le métier des armes et la volonté de paix.

L’Amazonie revient par vagues dans les médias occidentaux, tandis que son devenir – écologique, économique, politique – se fait plus incertain. Cet ouvrage se penche sur une de ses bordures occidentales, marquée par un mouvement socio-environnemental survenu en 2009. Celui-ci s’est conclu dramatiquement, et a démarré en raison de la remise en cause par le gouvernement du droit de propriété foncière collective des groupes autochtones. Si on a parfois conclu à l’obstruction principielle des indigènes à la marche du progrès, une perspective historienne invite plutôt à revenir sur la relation complexe, nouée par ces mêmes indigènes avec l’État et les dynamiques transnationales qui affectent leurs territoires. C’est le choix fait par cet ouvrage, qui examine un demi-siècle d’histoire dans le Haut Marañón, lieu de vie des Awajún, des Wampís, de populations métisses et d’étrangers, qui donnent à lire un « local » traversé de logiques globalisées. Missionnaires chrétiens, soldats chargés de faire frontière, indigènes allant à la ville et en revenant, colons en quête de subsistances, anthropologues à la recherche d’un autre modèle éducatif, activistes en quête d’une autre construction nationale, ingénieurs, médecins : ces acteurs se croisent, parfois sans se parler, et participent du dialogue difficilement établi avec la selva, cette Amazonie tour à tour fantasmée et crainte, qui n’en a pas moins toute sa place dans l’histoire péruvienne, et dans le débat mondial sur la notion et les modèles de développement.

Raising Sexually Pure Kids: Sexual Abstinence, Conservative Christians and American Politics analyzes pro-abstinence discourses issued by the conservative Christian community and the G.W. Bush administration, to underline that abstinence is not a peripheral matter, but is a cultural and political issue of great significance in US society, especially in the past decade. This book seeks to bring to light how pro-abstinence discourses coalesce most of the core agendas of conservative Christians – like creationism, parental rights or the culture war - and enabled them and the Bush administration, to on the one hand, preserve traditional hierarchies and on the other hand, maintain the sense of threat necessary to the protection of the status quo and to the enduring commitment of the conservative Christian constituency.
