Hen eggs have exceptional potential as an inexhaustible source for a variety of products with unique properties. These products are valuable to human health and nutrition and can be used as raw materials for diverse purposes in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. Bioactive Egg Compounds presents the latest results and concepts in the biotechnological use of egg compounds. Following an introduction to the different compounds of egg white, yolk and shell, the nutritive value of egg compounds is discussed. Procedures for processing egg compounds to improve their nutritive value are described, including the concept of so-called enriched eggs. Also described is the isolation and application of egg compounds with special properties, such as antibiotic action. Abstract

COST – the acronym for European COoperation in Science and Technology – is the oldest and widest European intergovernmental network for cooperation in - search. Established by the Ministerial Conference in November 1971, COST is presently used by the scientific communities of 35 European countries to coop- ate in common research projects supported by national funds. The funds provided by COST – less than 1% of the total value of the projects – support the COST cooperation networks (COST Actions) through which, with € 30 million per year, more than 30,000 European scientists are involved in - search having a total value which exceeds € 2 billion per year. This is the financial worth of the European added value which COST achieves. A “bottom up approach” (the initiative of launching a COST Action comes from the European scientists themselves), “à la carte participation” (only countries interested in the Action participate), “equality of access” (participation is open also to the scientific communities of countries not belonging to the European - ion) and “flexible structure” (easy implementation and light management of the research initiatives) are the main characteristics of COST.

Abstract

This book is a follow-up of LNCS volume 2929 with the same title, and presents the major results of COST action 274 (2002-2005), TARSKI: Theory and - plications of Relational Structures as Knowledge Instruments. Relational structures abound in the daily environment: relational databases, data-mining, scaling procedures, preference relations, etc. Reasoning about, and with, relations has a long-standing European tradition, which may be divided into three broad areas: 1. Algebraic Logic: algebras of relations, relational semantics, and algebras and logics derived from information systems. 2. Computational Aspects of Automated Relational Reasoning: decidability and complexity of algorithms, network satisfaction. 3. Applications: social choice, AI, linguistics, psychology, economics, etc. The main objective of the ?rst TARSKI book (LNCS 2929) was to advance the understanding of relational structures and the use of relational methods in applicable object domains. There were the following sub-objectives: 1. Tostudythesemanticalandsyntacticalaspectsofrelationalstructuresarising from ‘real world’ situations 2. To investigateautomatedinference for relationalsystems, and, wherepossible or feasible, develop deductive systems which can be implemented into industrial applications, such as diagnostic systems 3. To develop non-invasive scaling methods for predicting relational data 4. To make software for dealing with relational systems commonly available We are con?dent that the present book will further the understanding of int- disciplinary issues involving relational reasoning. This book consists of papers which give a clear and self-contained overview of the results obtained by the TARSKI action, typically obtained by di?erent persons from di?erent work - eas.

Abstract

This book contains the description of the research work done in ESF COST 290 Action "Traffic and QoS Management in Wireless Multimedia Networks" which ran from March 2004 to June 2008. Twenty four European countries contributed to the research within the ESF COST 290 Action with more than 70 institutions involved. The authors address new techniques and approaches to deal with the growth of data traffic in wireless mobile networks and the important need to guarantee differentiated quality of service levels to different traffic classes. The material presents the latest research achievements and results in research areas such as traffic engineering, mobility and interoperability, network architectures and planning as well as services, regulations, and economic aspects. This book covers broad areas of research on wireless communications and networking from the physical layer through the application layer. It is recommended for researchers and PhD students to receive a comprehensive and up-to-date overview on engineering approaches, optimization methods and open issues in wireless multimedia networks.

Abstract

Water in and beneath a road pavement has a major impact on the road's performance and its survivability. This book provides a state-of-the-art on the topic of water in pavements and the adjacent ground. It includes coverage of the basic theory; where the water comes from; how it may (or may not) be drained; the effect of temperature on the movement; how movements may be modelled numerically; and the impact that water content has on pavement material and subgrade behaviour. Sections on instrumentation and monitoring are also provided. With increased concerns that road construction may introduce contaminants into the environment, the book also studies environmental aspects of water in roads and their immediate surroundings by describing the leaching action of pavement water; the opportunities for the pavement to sorb contaminants from pavement run-off; water sampling; and water quality needs. It draws on information from a wide variety of sources, particularly in Europe and the USA, both published and unpublished, having been written by a broad team of practising engineers, hydrogeologists, environmental scientists and researchers. This book is the principal output of a large collaborative study performed as part of the COST programme, managed by the European Science Foundation. .

Abstract

In spite of all the efforts made in fire prevention and suppression, every year about 45 000 forest fires occur in Europe, burning ca. 0.5 million hectares of forests and other rural lands. The management of these burned forests has been given much less attention than fire prevention or fire suppression issues, but the post-fire management of burned areas raises strong concerns (economic and social impacts, soil erosion and water quality, biodiversity loss, forest restoration). Although there are a few publications which address post-fire management, the focus of these has been either on general approaches to restoration or specific topics such as preventing post-fire soil erosion. This book is about the post-fire management of fire-prone forest types in southern Europe.  It provides the first comprehensive overview of the topic, ranging from stand-level to landscape-level management, and from emergency actions to long-term restoration approaches. The book is divided into 2 major sections. The first includes five chapters where transversal topics such as recent changes in fire regimes in Southern Europe, the economic, legal and social aspects of post-fire management, fire hazard and flammability of different forest types, and post-fire management approaches, are addressed. The second section is divided in seven chapters, with a similar structure, each one dealing with the forest types more affected by wildfires in Europe (and other fire prone habitats such as shrublands),. The book is targeted to an audience of professionals (forest managers, landscape planners, and forest agency staff), graduate students and researchers. It is the first publication to access in comprehensive way post-fire management issues in European forests, for which only fragmented knowledge through specialized or grey literature was available so far.

Abstract

For centuries, scientists have been fascinated by the role of the Sun in the Earth's climate system. Recent discoveries, outlined in this book, have gradually unveiled a complex picture, in which our variable Sun affects the climate variability via a number of subtle pathways, the implications of which are only now becoming clear. This handbook provides the scientifically curious, from undergraduate students to policy makers with a complete and accessible panorama of our present understanding of the Sun-climate connection. 61 experts from different communities have contributed to it, which reflects the highly multidisciplinary nature of this topic. The handbook is organised as a mosaic of short chapters, each of which addresses a specific aspect, and can be read independently. The reader will learn about the assumptions, the data, the models, and the unknowns behind each mechanism by which solar variability may impact climate variability. None of these mechanisms can adequately explain global warming observed since the 1950s. However, several of them do impact climate variability, in particular on a regional level. This handbook aims at addressing these issues in a factual way, and thereby challenge the reader to sharpen his/her critical thinking in a debate that is frequently distorted by unfounded claims.
