The Cigarette: A Political History offers a fresh interpretation of tobacco's role in the twentieth century. It argues that tobacco played a vital and emblematic role in the history of twentieth century political economy. Far from being unregulated, tobacco was the most controlled and supported commodity produced in the United States during the twentieth century. The federal tobacco program was remarkably long lived, lasting nearly seven decades and ending only in 2004. By the 1960s, criticisms of the Tobacco industry and its state support were ubiquitous. Under the banner of "non-smokers' rights," by the mid-1970s activists began to rack up an impressive string of victories in curtailing public smoking at the local and state levels. By the final decades of the twentieth century, debates over tobacco were waged primarily on the terrain of its social cost. By placing tobacco at the center of American political economy, The Cigarette: A Political History joins the politics of the body to the American body politic.

The world today faces numerous challenges, including the ongoing fallout from the financial crisis and varied and diverse examples of violence and conflict across the globe. Combined with the many changes affecting both the regional and global balance of power - such as the apparent decline of the United States, the growing influence of the East, and the evolving role of international organizations - these challenges have led some to question how global power will be distributed in the coming two decades. Global Strategic Developments offers an examination of these developments, providing an exploration of the future of the global system and its international powers and organizations. With analysis of military, security, financial and economic challenges that face the Gulf, the wider Middle East and beyond, this book is of vital importance to those interested in the future of both geopolitical networks and the global monetary system.

In this gripping ethnography, Jeffrey J. Sallaz goes behind the scenes of the global casino industry to investigate the radically different worlds of work and leisure he found in identically designed casinos in the United States and South Africa. Seamlessly weaving political and economic history with his own personal experience, Sallaz provides a riveting account of two years spent working among both countries' casino dealers, pit bosses, and politicians. While the popular imagination sees the Nevada casino as a hedonistic world of consumption, The Labor of Luck shows that the "Vegas experience" is made possible only through a variety of systems regulating labor, capital, and consumers, and that because of these complex dynamics, the Vegas casino cannot be seamlessly picked up and replicated elsewhere. Sallaz's fresh and path-breaking approach reveals how neo-liberal versus post-colonial forms of governance produce divergent worlds at the tables, and how politics, profits, and pleasure have come together to shape everyday life in the new economy.

International political economy (IPE) is a highly complex discipline, drawing not only from the fields of politics and economics, but also those as varied as philosophy, history and anthropology. Now widely accepted as a key dimension to contemporary world affairs, it is no longer possible to talk about international relations without talking about production and distribution, finance and investment, as well as consumption and trade. To ensure that our understanding of these topics is relevant to today's world, there is a constant need to revisit and challenge what is known about these topics.

Why do some nations fail while others succeed? How can we compare the political capacity of a totalitarian regime to a democracy? Are democracies always more efficient? The Performance of Nations answers these key questions by providing a powerful new tool for measuring governments' strengths and weaknesses. Allowing researchers to look inside countries down to the local level as well as to compare across societies and over time, the book demonstrates convincingly that political performance is the missing link in measurin
