Abstract

After nearly three and a half -- rather too exciting -- years as a young war-time sailor, Alan Peacock expected to return to a life of quiet contemplation. Instead he became an activist economist frequently engaged in controversies about the conduct of economic policy lasting all his professional life. His earlier experiences at trying to 'do good' will resonate with all those who have attempted to influence political action, but the account is also designed to inform and entertain those who...

Abstract

The quadrupling of the world population in the 20th century has over-burdened the environment and accelerated the depletion of natural resources, whether renewable or not. The effort of the largest nations, China, India, and others, to attain affluence at this time further damages the environment and tax resources. Recently, fertility rates have fallen dramatically, below replacement in much of the world. The number of workers will be declining while the number elderly dependent on their support will be rising. Prospects for affluence are grim for rich and poor nations alike. There is no histo

Abstract

The functioning of the labour market and the impact of labour market policies are a long-standing issue in social and political debate. In this respect, labour market research acquires the necessary knowledge and often receives impulses from labour market policy. Conversely, progress in the development of research methods and data mining encourages labour market policymakers to ask new questions that have not been answered yet. Michael Stops picks up such developments and focusses on the following three issues: - Occupational mobility and the job matching efficiency - The development of job matching efficiency on partial occupational markets before, during and after the years of the German labour market reform 2003-2005 - The employment effect of the National Minimum Wage in the United Kingdom 1999-2012.

Abstract

Modern labour markets are characterised by the high levels of flexibility they demand of workers and unemployed individuals in particular. Increasing the willingness of jobseekers for regional mobility is an integral part of this development and was at the heart of the far reaching Hartz reforms of the German labour market in the early 2000s. Within this context, this research assesses the role regional mobility plays in the job search of unemployed individuals. Based on innovative experimental designs, rich administrative and survey data and state-of-the-art econometric analysis, Sebastian Bähr contributes to the ongoing debate on flexibility induced inequality in the labour market.

Abstract

Hauptbeschreibung ""Companies that do not adapt to the new global realities will become victims of those that do."" In this quote Theodor Levitt, a former professor at the Harvard Business School, points out that companies all over the world need to deal with a process which has changed the way they carry on a business in many ways. The process, namely globalisation, takes advantages as well as disadvantages, not only for the business world but also for the individual. The importance to face globalisation has always been there but, it has increased with the evolving stages of globalisation.

Abstract

Publikationssprache: Englisch For a considerable time now, the lack of equality in wage incomes in Germany has been getting clearly worse. Hence it is all the more important to at least guarantee equal opportunities in our society. The level of income - both for social and economic reasons - should be dependent on individual performance and not on one's parents' status. But what shape is equality of opportunity in Germany actually in? Is the income structure here so permeable that people from socially weak families also have a realistic chance of advancement? How high is economic mobility in Germany both between and within generations? And how does Germany do in comparison with other countries? Daniel Schnitzlein examines these questions using new methodological approaches and analyzes the causes of differing extents of economic mobility in international comparison.

Abstract

Numerous countries, Germany among them, are characterized by pronounced regional labor market disparities. Various regional economic studies provide very different approaches to explaining the existence of such variations. However only a few papers give information about the dynamics of regional labor market disparities: Do these increase with time, do they decrease, or do they remain stable? Moreover, the previous studies do not pay attention to the role played in this process by employee groups with differing levels of qualification. Daniel Werner's study closes these gaps. Werner also examines in detail adjustment processes in the wake of regional labor market shocks. His conclusion: The mobility of workers - and here especially commuting - is the most important adjustment mechanism.
