This collective work is a major resource that advances the conceptual framework and reveals the deep linkages between the gender discourse and human security. The book shows the relevance of such a paradigm for understanding human and political processes primarily in Latvia, but also provides a comparison with other countries in the Baltic region and beyond. This book shows that in order to understand the complexities of countries in transition, such as Latvia and others, the human security and gendered approach is critical not just for a holistic comprehension of the system but also as a guide to policy-makers and analysts, as it shows the intersections of security, development, rights and equity, all of which are essential for human development.

This book examines NATO's engagement with gender issues through its military structures. Drawing on newly declassified NATO documents, this volume provides the first comprehensive account of NATO's long-established engagement with gender issues. These documents bring to the fore the stories of the NATO women and 'gendermen' who have organised within NATO across the decades to advocate on gender issues and highlights the continued challenges to pursuing transformative agendas within resistant institutions. The book argues that NATO is an institution of international hegemonic masculinity, with gender norms and values learnt by member and partner states through socialisation and the engagement of a masculinist protection logic. It therefore provides an important context for NATO's recent implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda encapsulated in UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and the seven follow-up resolutions. The volume interrogates how Women, Peace and Security has mapped on to NATO's pre-existing concerns as a global security actor, providing impetus for further critical knowledge building of NATO which centres on gender.

In The Making of Modern Japan , Myles Carroll offers a sweeping account of post-war Japanese political economy, exploring the transition from the post-war boom to the crisis of today and the connections between these seemingly discrete periods. Carroll explores the multifarious international and domestic political, economic, social and cultural conditions that fortified Japan's post-war hegemonic order and enabled decades of prosperity and stability. Yet since the 1990s, a host of political, economic, social and cultural changes has left this same hegemonic order out of step with the realities of the contemporary world, a contradiction that has led to three decades of crisis in Japanese society. Can Japan make the bold changes required to reverse its decline?.

The reader will therefore gain in-depth insight into the most important aspects and positions in the debate.
