Grand connaisseur de la vie politique française, Habermas a suivi avec une attention toute particulière nos débats sur le référendum et la discussion sur le projet de Constitution européenne. Il est intervenu, avant, pendant et après le vote sur ce projet, sans pour autant faire abstraction de ses propres choix qui le portaient à la fois vers la nécessité d'une participation à la décision de l'ensemble des peuples concernés - donc vers la solution du référendum -, et vers celle d'une Constitution qui permettrait de passer à un autre stade que celui des horizons simplement nationaux.
