This book argues that critical international and domestic crises, such as the U.S. war in Iraq and the Great Recession, forced President Barack Obama to readjust U.S. foreign policy after over seventy years of American hegemony and defending the global status quo. The book examines the range of external pressures and challenges brought on by an increasingly multipolar international system, shifting domestic political forces, and limited foreign policy choices. It provides an overview of the extent of foreign policy change and continuity in Obama's foreign policy towards Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and the Middle East. The book assesses domestic and international pressure points in the wake of the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and the Great Recession that shaped and defined Obama's foreign policy preferences. The war in Iraq and the Great Recession - in addition to rising economic inequality and hyper-partisanship at home, emerging markets in Asia and the rise of China, and Russian resurgence in Europe and the Middle East - would determine and constrain the extent to which Obama was able to lead U.S. foreign policy and the foreign policymaking process. These ultimately contributed to a more scaled-back and limited U.S. role in the world during Obama's presidency, culminating in the 2016 presidential election of Donald Trump, who promised to turn the United States away from globalization and questioned longstanding U.S, alliances. In the end, the theme of 'nation-building here at home' under Obama gave way to 'America First' under Trump.

Historic, intriguing, and important in so many ways, the Obama presidency will be studied by scholars and students for years to come. With the rise in hyperpartisanship, legislative gridlock, political dysfunction, 'fake news', and other negative trends, it is imperative that academicians weigh in with a rigorous assessment of Obama's presidency. This volume applies a variety of scholarly approaches to analyze the impact of Obama as a leader and policymaker. Scholars from disciplines such as political science, history, environmental science, economics, and communication come together to provide an interdisciplinary and wide-ranging appraisal of the president. Across the varied chapters, Obama's leadership is central to understanding the success or failure of his policies and initiatives. The president's decisions and actions are also assessed against the constraints and possibilities created by the modern US political system, rapid changes in technology and society, and shifting patterns in international relations. The result is a book that covers executive leadership, administration, domestic issues, foreign and national security policy, and more, to present a comprehensive review of the Obama legacy.

From the Baltic to the South China Sea, newly assertive authoritarian states sense an opportunity to resurrect old empires or build new ones at America's expense. Hoping that U.S. decline is real, nations such as Russia, Iran, and China are testing Washington's resolve by targeting vulnerable allies at the frontiers of American power. This book explains why the United States needs a new grand strategy that uses strong frontier alliance networks to raise the costs of military aggression in the new century. The authors describe the aggressive methods rival nations are using to test U.S. power in strategically critical regions throughout the world. They show how rising and revisionist powers are putting pressure on frontier allies - countries like Poland, Israel, and Taiwan - to gauge the commitment to upholding the U.S.-led global order. The authors reveal how numerous would-be great powers use an arsenal of asymmetric techniques to probe and sift American strength across several regions simultaneously, and how rivals and allies alike are learning from America's management of increasingly interlinked global crises to hone effective strategies of their own.

The author's collection of essays on U.S. national security and foreign policy is a wake up call to the American people. The world has become steadily more dangerous under President Obama's 'lead from behind' foreign policy. The Obama Administration's foreign policy has emboldened our adversaries and disheartened our allies. Indeed, Obama's nuclear deal with Iran is a 1938 moment. At the same time, the U.S. military has been cut and risks returning to the hollow force days of the 1970s. The author lays out the challenges and provides the common sense 'peace through strength' solutions that will allow the next president to make America great again.

Remember when presidents spoke in complete sentences instead of in unhinged tweets ? Former Obama speechwriter David Litt does. In his comic coming-of-age memoir, he takes us back to the Obama years. With a storyteller's attention to detail and a humorist's eye for the absurd, the author uses his experience to address one of the most important issues facing today's America : the legacy and future of the Obama movement in the presidency of Donald Trump.
